Discussion Groups

What is a discussion group?

It is a forum by which alumni can communicate with each other on a variety of different topics.

Are they web based?

Yes, the discussion groups do exist on the web. The discussion groups page, http://TigerNet.Princeton.EDU/Discussions, allows alumni to register, read and post.

Is the e-mail interface still available?

Yes it is. However, postings must now be directed to listname@lists.tigernet.princeton.edu (eg. career-networking@tigernet.princeton.edu) instead of the lists.princeton.edu domain.

Why the switch from lists.princeton.edu to tigernet.princeton.edu?

The listserver software is new software running on a different server. Princeton University continues to run its internal lists on the lists.princeton.edu domain, so it was not available for the new alumni server. Thus, the tigernet.princeton.edu domain is being employed specifically for alumni discussion groups.

How do I subscribe to a discussion group?

To subscribe, login to the discussion group area of TigerNet at

http://TigerNet.Princeton.EDU/Discussions

and click on the name of the group that interests you. Choose your delivery mode and hit the subscribe button. The different delivery modes are:

  • Web: No e-mail will be sent to your account. You may post, read and search messages via the TigerNet discussion group webpage at http://TigerNet.Princeton.EDU/Discussions.

  • E-mail: You will receive postings from «Group_Name», to the e-mail account you indicate, as they occur throughout the day.

  • Digest E-mail: You will receive one digest e-mail per day encompassing the previous 24 hours of postings.

How do I unsubscribe from a group?

To unsubscribe, login to the discussion group area of TigerNet at http://TigerNet.Princeton.EDU/Discussions and click on the name of the group. Click on the unsubscribe button.

Can I switch between the e-mail and web interfaces?

Yes, it is possible to switch between the two.

How do I change my discussion group configuration?

Login to the discussion group area of TigerNet at http://TigerNet.Princeton.EDU/Discussions and click on the name of the group. From there, you may change the delivery mode of the group to switch between the web and e-mail interface, change your delivery address or unsubscribe.

What is digest e-mail?

Some users find that their inbox is rapidly filled by discussion group e-mail postings. To alleviate this, it is possible to subscribe to groups in digest mode. Instead of multiple postings from a group, a digest mode subscriber receives one e-mail per day encapsulating the previous 24 hours of posts to a group.

How do I post and read messages?

Login to the discussion group area of TigerNet at http://TigerNet.Princeton.EDU/Discussions and click on the group name under the "My Discussion Groups" area. From there you can post, read and search messages. All previous postings to group can also be found at that site.

When will I receive e-mail messages if I choose the e-mail interface?

E-mail interface subscribers will receive messages as they are posted or can request to receive a digest of all messages posted during the day in a single batch.

Are there archives of past postings? Are they searchable?

Yes, all postings are listed, categorized by month and year, on the discussion group area of TigerNet at:

http://TigerNet.Princeton.EDU/Discussions

Click on the group name under the "My Discussion Groups" area. This section also contains a facility for searching the archives by keyword.

Who can help me if I have problems using the list?

The listowners of each group can help. They are listed under each group at:

http://TigerNet.Princeton.EDU/Discussions.

Who can help me with questions about the content of the list?

The listowners of each group. They are listed under each group at:

http://TigerNet.Princeton.EDU/Discussions

What is the process for establishing a Discussion Group?

A new discussion group must be distinct from existing discussion groups and must serve a segment of the Princeton alumni community. Discussion groups need two alumni moderators. Send a request to tigernet@alumni.princeton.edu with a proposal, including a description of the group, an initial registrant greeting, and the proposed list owners/moderators.

What is the process for terminating a Discussion Group?

The discussion group list owners/moderators are responsible for making a request to tigernet@alumni.princeton.edu in order to terminate a discussion group. In accordance with posted Tigernet policy, Princeton University also reserves the right, at its sole discretion, and without notice, to cancel a discussion group.
