World Cup Soccer in Germany Football (known as soccer in the U.S.) is renowned for breeding a religious sense of team pride and loyalty throughout much of the world. Although not quite to that level in the United States, soccer still enjoys a strong following, particularly among Princetonians with their strong tradition of success in both men's and women's athletics. Join fellow Princetonians on a journey to Germany during the World Cup tournament’s first days, June 10-17, 2006, and consider the social (and perhaps political) impact of sport throughout history and today. The program begins with three nights in Cologne, where participants will discuss nationalism and sport and root for his or her own team. After a tour of the newly built, state-of-the-art stadium in Gelsenkirchen, watch two first-round matches in person and feel the fervor. After visiting other sites in Cologne and Potsdam, carry on to Berlin for a three-night stay. Visit both East and West and, in the waterfront viewing areas erected for the tournament, watch televised matches with the locals before heading home.
