Why is Princeton's Office of the Alumni Association no longer offering or supporting TigerNet Webmail/POP3 E-mail Services?
When e-mail accounts were first offered nearly ten years ago as part of our suite of TigerNet Online Services, it was at a time when just one or two Internet Service Providers (ISP's) offered e-mail on a paid subscription basis only. Our e-mail accounts, while very basic in function, provided alumni with free e-mail and the benefit of having an @alumni.Princeton.edu e-mail address.
As you may be aware, ISP's have now begun offering very sophisticated e-mail services with significantly larger mailbox capacities, improved SPAM filtering and excellent 24/7 customer service at no cost to the subscriber. Given the availability of these far more robust services, we have made the decision after lengthy review to offer and maintain e-mail forwarding accounts only. The forward-only e-mail service is, as it has been for many years, free of charge. Most importantly, it will allow you to keep your @alumni.Princeton.edu e-mail address so that this change is transparent to your e-mail correspondents.
What led to this decision?
There was no one factor that led to this decision. Rather, the decision was made after an extensive two-year review that involved OIT, University Counsel, the Office of the Alumni Association, and the volunteer leadership of the Alumni Association. We reviewed the commercial options available and consulted widely with our peers among universities. While we know that this decision may be initially disappointing to some e-mail users, we are confident that after the conversion users will find that they have the best of both worlds: an alumni.princeton.edu address with all the advanced benefits of their commercial ISP.
How does this affect my @alumni.Princeton.edu e-mail address?
The change to no longer offer or support TigerNet Web Mail/POP3 services will not cause you to lose your @alumni.Princeton.edu e-mail address if you switch to an e-mail forwarding account. Once you have created an e-mail account with a new e-mail services provider, log into TigerNet's E-mail Services and follow the instructions to establish e-mail forwarding. The first step will be to delete your TigerNet Web Mail service. This must be done before e-mail forwarding can be established.
NOTE: Before you delete your TigerNet Web Mail/POP3 account, be sure you have transferred all mail and address information that you want to keep from this account to your new account. Once the Princeton Web Mail/POP3 account is deleted, the information in it is irretrievable.
Do I have to give up my Web Mail/POP3 e-mail account and switch to e-mail forwarding?
Yes. If you want to retain the use of your @alumni.princeton.edu e-mail address, you will need to convert your Web Mail/POP3 e-mail account to an e-mail forwarding account.
How long do I have to make the switch?
We are asking all alumni with Web Mail/POP3 accounts to convert to an e-mail forwarding account no later than October 31, 2006. After that time, Web Mail/POP3 accounts will no longer be supported and will be deleted.
How do I go about making the switch?
Instructions on how to convert your account, as well as information on what you need to do before you convert, are available in the "E-mail Conversion Information" document found at https://tigernet.princeton.edu/Princetonemail/.
Where can I sign up for a new e-mail service provider?
Princeton University's Office of the Alumni Association has compiled a short list of some of the more popular e-mail service providers which includes information regarding their various products and services. This list is available in the “E-mail Conversion Information” document at https://tigernet.princeton.edu/Princetonemail/. We do not endorse one company over another and we know that in the rapidly-changing ISP world the list may quickly become out-of-date; however, we are confident that you will be able to find an e-mail service that will fit your needs. You may also want to check to see what e-mail services your current ISP provides.
IMPORTANT: Before signing up with any provider, be sure to read both their Terms of Service or Use and their Privacy Policy. Terms of Service or Use typically explain the rights and responsibilities of both you the user and the provider. Privacy Policies outline how your personal information may or may not be collected, stored, secured and shared.
With e-mail forwarding, can I send e-mails from my @alumni.princeton.edu e-mail account?
Most e-mail clients provide you with the ability to change the From/Reply Name so that you can send e-mail from your @alumni.princeton.edu e-mail address. This option is activated through the settings of your actual e-mail account. Each e-mail client handles the From/Reply Name differently. If you require assistance with configuring From/Reply Name options, please refer to your e-mail client's Help/Support materials or contact their Technical Support personnel.
How do I move e-mail out of my existing TigerNet Web Mail or POP3 account to my new e-mail account?
Any e-mails that you want to save will need to be forwarded to your new e-mail account. Unfortunately, there is no bulk process to move all the mail you want to save so you will need to forward each item individually.
How do I move my existing address/contact list in my TigerNet Web Mail or POP3 account to my e-mail account?
To export contacts from your address book to an external file in order to use elsewhere:
- Log into your TigerNet e-mail account.
