President's Message

September 2000
Participation in class affairs was excellent this year.  According to Ed Bragdon, 74.3% of classmates (266) paid dues and 15% of associates.  Bill Sloane reports that 82.9% (296) contributed to annual giving.  There are presently 357 classmates (last year 365) and 128 associates (last year 111) on our active mail roll.
Our 57th reunion was held May 25 to May 28, 2000 at the Graduate School and was attended by 16 classmates.  Next year we expect to be at the GS again for our 58th from May 31 to June 3, 2001.
A Tiger statuette was awarded to Jack Laflin by the class in recognition of his 21, and still counting, years as Class secretary.
There will be a class gathering in Jadwin on October 21, 2000 for the Harvard game and Alumni Day, and the Service of Remembrance will be on February 24, 2001.
Please note that the class web page is http://alumni.princeton.edu/~cl1943 and updates may be sent to Adam Friedlander '01, our webmaster, at adamf@princeton.edu or to John Brinster at jfbrain@aol.com or Jim Robinson at jamesrob43@aol.com.  We currently have 72 classmates online and 4 associates.
A brick wall is to be built shortly on Palmer Square in Tiger Park by the Princeton Area Community with the names of those who have lived in Princeton Boro in the 20th century.  To honor the great class of 1943, we have purchased a brick to be placed in the wall inscribed with the class name.
The annual dues card is enclosed (in the mailed version of this letter).  Dues remain at $43, with lines for voluntary contributions to the Gordon Allen Fund and to the 60th reunion.  Pete Platten and committee will decide on the disposition of the GAF ("for the good of the class as a whole") by our 60th reunion.  Contributors to the 60th reunion will reduce the high cost of past reunions and we hope to increase attendance.
The other class officers and I will appreciate any questions or comments on class matters, and I look forward to seeing you soon.

With Best Regards,
Jim Walsh

March 2000
I finally bought a computer last February since it is the 21st Century...a Compaq.  The result was a fiasco.  No matter how I tried with and without the assistance of the technicians from Windows 98 and Compaq, I was unable to connect to the Internet because I could not get a dial tone.  I thought there must have been something wrong with the modem, so I returned the computer to the store as defective and was given a second Compaq.  Again, no dial tone.  I must have been on the telephone with various technicians from Windows 98 and Compaq for a total of 10-12 hours for both computers, but to no avail.  I called on a couple of friends for their help, since they know "everything about computers," but, the same result, no dial tone.  Since my two week return period was almost up, I packed the computer etc. back in their boxes and returned the computer to the store for credit.  I am now, as before, without a computer, but I have not given up.  I will try again in a month or two when I have recovered from this rather traumatic experience, and will keep you posted on my computer status.
