Sixty-One Goes to Alumni Day 2006
by Pat Davidson
Nine members of the Class of 1961 and their wives and guests
enjoyed reconnecting at the Alumni Day luncheon on Saturday,
February 25th. This luncheon followed a stimulating morning of
lectures. On Friday half of our group attended the Woodrow Wilson
School’s 75th Anniversary Government Service Seminar.
The 1961 contingent was led by Joe McGinity, Ken Scasserra
(wearing a snappy Princeton Hockey blazer), Joe Prather and son Tony
*97, Justin
Kimball and Spencer Reynolds. Rounding out this group were Elihu
Leifer, Gil Omenn and wife Martha Darling, Steve and Jennifer Ely,
Patrick and Diane Davidson and guest David Jones.
Justin
Kimball was wearing our new and very attractive Class of 1961 tie.
This tie features a prowling tiger at the bottom with a series of
1961 numbers forming diagonal stripes.
On Saturday afternoon Steve Ely represented our class at the
Service of Remembrance held at the University Chapel. The Class of
1961 Memorial Roll included: Robert Allen Stanger, Richard Stuart
Rehder and William Angus Marr, Jr. who had passed away in 2004.
Steve and Jennifer Ely recently returned from a delayed but
delightful three-week honeymoon to China. Jennifer and her daughter
will be joining us this June for their first Princeton Reunion.
Several of us looked at a student taking notes at a McCosh 50
lecture, "Woodrow Wilson and the Decision For War." When
the lecture was over, the "student" put on a 1961 hat.
That student was none other than Joe McGinity who is teaching high
school history in PA. Having failed retirement, he’s working on
his PA teaching certificate. (Didn’t he major in Naval Science?
And Houseparties?)
At the close of the Woodrow Wilson School Conference before
Alumni Day, Dean Ann Marie Slaughter noted that the school was
particularly fortunate to have "Distinguished Residents with
prior government service like Fred Hitz ’61 (former Inspector
General of the CIA) and others who were serving as "Role
Models" for students interested in government service. Being a
role model has done great things for Fred. He looks trim and appears
to have lost 20 pounds. Fred looked very professional in his dark
blue suit accented by a beautiful American flag tie. Wow! What a
makeover!
Late on Friday a number of ‘61 classmates had the opportunity
to hear Dr. Ben Bernanke, the new Chairman of the Federal Reserve,
speak on the importance of price stability in promoting economic
growth. Then Justin Kimball, Patrick and Diane Davidson represented
the class at the Annual Giving reception and dinner. They all got to
see the last few minutes of the Dartmouth-Princeton basketball game.
Princeton came from behind to tie the game and then made a dazzling
three point play that gave Princeton the win with less than 34
seconds to play. |
