Who was there?
'61 Ball Busters Score at Legacy Golf Club, March 14, 2007As Scott McWhinnie prepared for his second shot on "The Watering Hole" at Legacy, he had mixed emotions. His ball had landed at the edge of a huge lake, and he was standing in shallow water hoping to avoid further trouble on this par 3. He couldn't hit toward the hole, but aimed along the shoreline hoping for a better lie for his next shot. Draudt was already on the green, and McGinity's ball was hiding. As water began to soak his feet the wondered why Swan had picked this golf course anyway, and swung with his 7 iron. The ball rolled straight along the shoreline for all of 20 yards before slowing down and dribbling into the water, possibly under the influence of the rough, the slope, and the feared "water demons" on this picturesque course in Bradenton, FL. And this was just the 4th hole. On this warm, breezy day in Florida we all had precarious lies from time to time, but had a great time together on a very challenging course. Water and sand were everywhere, it seemed, and the wind became a factor on the back nine. Several pair of red-headed sand hill cranes kept us company around the course, calmly digging for snails as we searched the boondocks for missing balls. Three of us shot in the '80's (a very good score on this course), Draudt, Wickenden and Swan. Draudt took the prize for low gross. McWhinnie and Leisring split the pot for forecasting their scores. We gathered for beers afterwards, (see photos) and hoisted one for our missing golfers - including Andy Higgins, who is recovering from cracked ribs and couldn't play. Dinner was at a nearby Stonewood's Grill and Tavern, with a more civilized group. Mike and Gail Miller joined us, as did Suzanne, Maureen, Marsha and Brenda. (see photo) Sam and Marsha gave us a report of last week's class dinner, and a pleasant evening ensued, spiced by a good meal and lots of laughs. (Reporter: Joe McG)
