John W. McCarter is President and Chief Executive Officer of The
Field Museum — one of the great natural history museums in the
world.
The Field Museum is an international leader in environmental
conservation, evolutionary biology, paleontology. and anthropology. Its
collections number over 21 million specimens, and the staff includes 72
Ph.D's. The Field has activities in 93 countries.
The Museum’s educational programs and exhibits attracted more than 4
million visitors during the last 2 years including 700,000 students, and
its distance learning program over the internet and public television
stations reached 12 million students. Its close ties with the University
of Chicago and the University of Illinois are models for institutional
alliances.
A native Chicagoan, McCarter previously was Senior Vice President of
Booz Allen & Hamilton, Inc. Earlier in his career, he served as
President of DeKalb Corporation and was Budget Director of the State of
Illinois under Governor Richard B. Ogilvie. He was a White House Fellow
during the administration of Lyndon B. Johnson.
McCarter is a Director of W.W. Grainger, A.M. Castle, Harris Insight
and Janus Funds and Divergence, Inc. He is a board member and former
Chairman of Chicago’s Public Television Station Channel 11, a trustee of
the University of Chicago. and a director of the Chicago Public Education
Fund.
Mr. McCarter is a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Business
School, and also attended the London School of Economics.
