To the Class:
To all of you have already sent in your checks, we thank you. We want all of The Class of 1958 to know we are planning the best Reunion we have ever had. I'm sure you are aware of our many Award Winning Reunions in the past; and after all of these years we are getting kind of good at it. We know what we are doing and I think you will see the results of "years of experience". We also know what you want and what makes you happy.
For those of you who have not yet sent in your checks, please do so. We need 130 more classmates to sign up for this Reunion NOW to make it the success our Class deserves. We really need you there. We have previously written about all of the reasons you might have for not coming. Some of you do have family graduations to attend, and some of you are giving presentations elsewhere; we are proud of you and we wish you well. We will miss you.
For all of you who will come together for this great event, here is an outline so that you can plan accordingly. This is NOT final. You will receive the final schedule upon your arrival.
WILSON COLLEGE, (WILCOX HALL) --- OUR HEADQUARTERS
We will be open for registration and ready to go at 3:00 PM. Some wonderful musicians will be there to welcome you. It would be good to get there before 6:00 and get settled in. This is a chance for you to meet old friends, new friends and our phenomenal undergraduate crew. We will be sending out maps so that you understand where we will be and how to get there easily. Remember, no cars are allowed on campus. We strongly suggest the wonderful bus service (Stouts Bus Service) provided along Route One. It runs regularly and is excellent. The buses are there for your use at no charge since the Class has already paid $1800 for this. There is also transportation from all of the University parking lots but after a long evening you may prefer to be driven right back to your hotel. Most of us will use this service.
5:30 PM - Cocktails and Hors d'oeuvres. Attire: The Class Jacket for Classmates, and if possible a touch of Orange and Black for family and friends.
6:00 PM - We will start serving Dinner at 6:00 and will continue serving until 9:00 PM. This will be a "continuous" buffet. There will be a raw bar, mussels, lobster, corn on the cob, lemon pepper chicken and salads. We really believe most of the Class will be in place about 7:00; that’s the way 40th Reunions work. It is a more relaxed atmosphere than you have ever experienced before.
7:00 PM - The Royal Society Jazz Orchestra of San Francisco will appear for your listening and dancing pleasure; they are extraordinary. I am proud that the Class of 1983 will be presenting them on Friday night (which will certainly help OUR costs!).
FRIDAY MAY 29th
Faculty and Alumni Forums take place in the morning. Some of our classmates will be appearing at these. They are most interesting and we think you will be pleased with what you see and hear. There are many extra-curricular events all over the Campus starting Friday morning. The University will publish a complete agenda. If you want to witness the dedication of a building in which one of our classmates plays the role of sponsor, look at about 4:00 p.m. in the master schedule. For those of you who like to play golf, make your arrangements before hand with Paul Levy at (609) 896-1804.
2:00 PM - For those of you who are interested, we will have an informal discussion about ideas for our Class "In the Nation's Service" Project. We thought that mid-afternoon might be a good time. We are open to all kinds of ideas. We do have one idea already in discussion, which we will be presenting at that time. This will take place at our Headquarters.
6:00 PM - COCKTAIL RECEPTION
Frederick Hodges, who has been The Cocktail Pianist at the Ritz Carlton in San Francisco for many years, will be at The Grand Piano.
7:00 PM - DINNER - We have a lovely dinner which is somewhat more formal than on Thursday, featuring filet of beef and poached salmon, lovely wines; and a few surprise appearances.
9:00 PM - 1:00 AM - The South Frisco Jazz Band, possibly the greatest traditional jazz band around today, and The World Famous Olympia Brass Band (which appears every Sunday Night at Preservation Hall in New Orleans) will "trade times", one giving the stage up to the other. You will recall we have had these bands before and they are tremendously popular. Milton Batiste, who runs The Olympia Jazz Band, and most of its members, originally did rock and roll when they were younger, and you will see this kind of music performed as well as they did it then.
SATURDAY, MAY 30Th
Breakfast is on your own.
10:00 AM - The Class of 1958 presents The South Frisco Jazz Band and The Olympia Brass Band in probably the most phenomenal concert given at Princeton University since Bix Beiderbecke died. It is the second time these two great jazz bands have ever appeared together. It was an extraordinary experience five years ago to watch this; don't miss it.
11:30 AM - The Class picture will be taken on the steps of Blair Arch. Due to numerous requests we will have two pictures taken. One will be of members of the Class of 1958 and the second will be of the Class of 1958, their family and friends. So we have two great photo opportunities. You are strongly requested to wear the Class Jacket, white pants, a tie and the new Class hat. We ask that everyone dress accordingly as it makes for a memorable, historic photograph. We are using the services of Panorama International, which has done this for us since the 25th Reunion. These are keepsakes as we watch the Class evolve.
12:00 - 1:15 PM - Lunch will be served at Headquarters. We have invited some of the bands that will be marching with us to join us for lunch, particularly the Trenton Central High School Band. We think that you might like to meet these terrific young people. Many of them dream of possibly attending a school like Princeton and some might get the incentive to attend because of this experience. We are going to take them all on a tour of the campus; and that will be lead by some Trenton High Alumni who are also graduates of Princeton. In the P-Rade we are going to have The Olympia, South Frisco, The Trenton Central High School Marching Band, and possibly some surprises. We are sharing our bands with the Class of 1933, 1983 and 1993 who are picking up a significant part of the costs.
2:00 PM - The one and only P-Rade
5:00 PM - Wilcox Hall--Our Headquarters
The Class of 1933, 1958 and 1983 will join together in a wonderful celebration. When Bill Fortenbaugh first started to "rally" for our adoption of the Class of 1933's jacket, it was an uphill battle. The warmth and associations that have resulted will be seen at this great event. We are encouraging the Class of 1983 to join us in these "vibrant colors". At 5:00 PM when we are together, everyone will be asked to fill out a form showing their birthdate. We are going to have 12 places around the tent where you can go and meet people who are 25 years older than you are and 25 years younger than you are (and possibly some of your own classmates who were born on or near the day you were born). This is a great experience - with amazing fellowship. On a very personal level, one of my closest friends in the Class of 1933 and I met just this way. For the past 25 years we have shared extraordinary ideas together as he tells me what Princeton and life was like before most of us were born. We have discussed some of life's biggest changes now that he is in his late eighties. I have asked him whether life is better now than it was when he was young. Every person from the Class of 1933 to whom I have asked this question has given me a very positive answer. Think of some of the things you would like to ask your new found "birthday" acquaintances.
6:00 PM - Cocktails
7:00 PM - Dinner will be served at our Headquarters; It will be a Barbecue featuring Ribs and Chicken, catered by Otto Rode, famous for wonderful Pit Barbecues.
9:00 PM - 12:00 Midnight - The Royal Society Jazz Orchestra of San Francisco will be playing in a different, informal mode, much as they do when they play at major jazz festivals in the United States. I can tell you that at The Great Connecticut Traditional Jazz Festival, they are an astounding draw and extremely popular.
SUNDAY, MAY 31st
9:00 AM - Breakfast
At our Class Breakfast we will all get a chance to say farewell until our next Reunion. Remember that we have Off Year Reunions every year and more and more people are attending these as we get older. We have ten more years, believe it or not, until our 50th and those years, I am told, go by very, very quickly.
