The Why and How of the Jazz and Handbell Concert

Ed Polcer, world-reknowned jazz musician and Member of the Great Class of 1958 agreed to have his jazz band play on Thursday evening of our 45th Reunion. Ed came up with the brilliant thought: "You manage Schulmerich Bells, America's oldest manufacturer of handbells, wouldn't it be great if we got together for a jazz and handbell concert."

We wanted a special arrangement for the occasion. Schulmerich turned to Hart Morris, prolific handbell composer/arranger, conductor, and clinician, and commissioned him to arrange the Princeton Jazz Classics Medley for Handbells and Jazz Ensemble.

Ed Polcer formed the Nassau Jazz Band (reminiscent of his undergraduate days). All members have a close association with Princeton. Dr. Larry Smith and the Carillon Handbell Choir of the University of Southern Mississippi were planning an east coast concert tour. The pieces need to make the dream a reality fell into place. Carillon is a college handbell choir which playes almost 7 octaves of Schulmerich bells, and 5 octaves of Schulmerich MelodyChime® Instruments.

I am delighted that the Great Class of 1958 and Schulmerich Bells are able to present this concert to you today.

Ed Polcer

Ed Polcer has taken his music from the streets of New York to the Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Royal Palace in Thailand, the national Gallery of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the White House.

Along the way, he's owned, managed, and played at New York's premier jazz club, Eddie Condon's; played for five U.S. Presidents; played return engagements at the Newport/JVC Jazz Festival; produced/directed hundreds of concerts; and served for nearly ten years as President of the International Art of Jazz.

Nassau Jazz Band

Ed recalls with great fondness his undergraduate years at Princeton in the mid-fifties as leader of the Nassau Jazz Band. He also recalls being welcomed into the Greater Princeton Community of alumni jazz musicians at jam sessions in their homes in Princeton. Among those alumni is Sandy Maxwell, '39. Today's concert is a continuation of that tradition as Ed, Sandy and Tom Artin, '60 welcome Audrey Wright, Dan Ryan, and Jon Marks, '05 into the Nassau Jazz Band.
