September 5, 2008

This will be the last Newsnote that your humble servant puts up on this Web page. After all these many years (over 12 ) since this site was started, it is time to move on . This will give me the opportunity to pursue other interests that have been put on the back burner.

It has been a great honor doing this. It was a way to meet so many people all over the world, and we were amazed that so many "tuned us in" who had nothing to do with Princeton. It also turned out that we met many in the Class of !958 who we hardly knew while at school. It certainly helped us bring so many of you to the Reunions we had. It was especially gratifying to see so many people come back to the 50th who had never been back to Princeton since we graduated.

I hope you liked the music and had fun. I hoped you found what you wanted on this site. It was great getting to know so many of you through these pages, and I wish you all good things. Thank you for the privilege.

David

Well-it was wonderful and worth all the years of effort it took to make it all work. The innumerable congratulatory letters and wonderful notes of thanks make one feel humble in the thought that we were able to do it. And the joy on all of your faces, and the thrill of seeing so many in The Class of 2008 spending time with us, and enjoying it thoroughly, was something very special. We've just heard the first rough cut recording of our Service in The Chapel-it is extraordinary. And we also had the music of every group playing at The Reunion recorded at The Reunion for three days. We are going to have the whole thing professionally edited; and then we will have it all produced for you. When that is done every member of The Class of 1958 will get all of this to remember for the rest of their lives-and we are sure it will bring back wonderful thoughts of a very special time.

May 21st, 2008

Here is our gorgeous Podium escutcheon. This will be part of a silent auction at The Reunion. Bids for this will start at $1000.00.-and then you can take it home with you!

April 4, 2008

One important service that we advertise in our Reunion program is the availability of Alcoholics Anonymous Support . We have learned of the great difficulty that some classmates have in attending Reunions because of the history of alcohol involvement in these events. Through AA people can find comfort and support when necessary, which may convince more of our Class to join us in this wonderful celebration. The Reunion Committee strives to make the Reunion experience as comfortable as possible for all. We hope those in the Class who wish to do so will avail themselves of this service.

April 4, 2008

Through our work on the Reunion and in speaking to many members of the Class, we have become aware of the LGBT Center, the University's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Center. It is an important addition to campus that we hope it will make many of our Classmates who found their experience at Princeton uncomfortable find a much more welcoming atmosphere and a good reason to come back to our 50th Reunion. It means a great deal to us that every member of the Class feel happy about returning to campus. We hope that this addition to Princeton may induce more people to return and be warmly welcomed by the Class.

March 23, 2008

We apologize to our faithful readers for not keeping our News Notes as current as they should be, but we are literally overwhelmed with preparations for what will undoubtedly be the most extraordinary Reunion Princeton has ever seen. As we go into the final countdown-there are only 66 days left to the start, we are inundated with meetings, Emails and inquiries. Within the next month a letter will go out with the answer to most of your questions. We hope that you all are ready for an amazing three days.

February 20th, 2008

Lew Reid has carefully cellared a phenominal bottle of wine for many, many years. Here is a picture of it: Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1958! He is giving it to us so that we may have an Auction-with The Proceeds going to The Reunion. If you want to put in a bid, send it to Maggie Bruno maggieb@66highstreet.com and we will start to announce the high bids and then, when we know who won, we will ask for the winner's check. We will have the bottle at the Reunion for you to open, if you so choose, or you may take it home with you.

February 18th, 2008

The "Formal" outfit for the Reunion that will be worn for a number of events is pretty much the same as the one worn at our 25th Reunion. It includes our famous classic striped jacket (which we copied at our 25th from the Class of 1933, who in wore it at their 50th and will wear it this year at their 75th), white duck pants, white bucks, white button down collared shirt, and the Class tie. We will be selling another really magnificent Class tie if you do not have one or wish to buy a new one. We will try to put a picture of it on the Website shortly.

This attire will be worn at our Friday night dinner, at the Prade, and if you can, at the Class Memorial Service in The Chapel, which will be held on Friday May 30, 2008 at 10:30 am.

More news on the informal regalia worn at other times during The Reunion will follow in a few weeks.

December 23, 2007

Yesterday Bill Trimble received a letter via snail mail from The Alumni Office, notifying him that the Class, for the 2006-2007 fiscal year, had received the 1932 Plaque for having achieved the highest percentage of alumni dues payers--68.2% of all Princeton Classes 25 to 50 years out. As Bill states: "This stellar accomplishment gives credit to all Class Dues payers and to Ted Bromley, our Class Treasurer".

November 27, 2007

After a 12-day hiatus out of the country , we're back on line, and we have good news to report on the 50th Reunion page. We look forward to your reading that and learning about the yearbook, and seeing the tremendous on-time record that we have maintained with that. The Yearbook will be sent out to you this Friday !

October 28, 2007

As we start to get into full gear for the Reunion, we are always looking for more volunteers to help out. If you have any interest in working with the Reunion staff, please send an e-mail to The Chair: David A. Greenberg at: davida58@ alumni.Princeton.EDU or the Vice Chair : John Kuhlthau at : jkulthau@attnet . We certainly can use your help, and would be most appreciative of your assistance!

October 25, 2007

Thanks to all of you who regularly read our Class Website to keep current on Princeton news and events. We encourage you to tell your '58 friends who don't use this site to do what they can to get access to it - perhaps requesting assistance from their children or grandchildren. Some people still use the old convoluted address. A simple: Princeton1958.com is what works best. The Website helps us keep costs down by reducing the number of US Postal Service mailings we have to do to keep everyone updated. We will have one mailing going out shortly, but the Website is still the easiest and quickest way of getting the latest Class information.

October 18, 2007

Be sure to see our 50th Reunion page for all the new hotel listings and all the attendees to date. If you're not on the list, try to get on it as soon as you can. Remember that our prices go up shortly after the first of the year. The faster you register, the better opportunity you will have to guarantee the best pricing and best locations for rooms. The response so far has been great, and we are most appreciative. Wait till you see all that will be going on at the Reunion - you won't believe your it.

October 17, 2007

Not only have we been graced to have the phenomenal Blair site for our Reunion, but we now have an additional location which the undergraduates recently started to refer affectionately as " Alexander Beach ", as they sunbathe there in the spring. This has long been a dream of Al Bates ; he always wanted to put a big tent there, and now he has been allowed to do this. We will be the first class to use this marvelous site for all our Reunion dining. It is in close proximity to our other Reunion events, which means we won't have to go far to enjoy the fine food and drink that will be served at all our dinners. It is quite a coup for Al!

October 3rd, 2007

As mentioned in the Newsnote of September 27, 2007, the Class of '83 extended an invitation to our Class and others to attend the party that they are throwing preceding the Hampton game on Saturday October 6, 2007. The party starts at 1:30 PM, and will be at FitzRandolph Field, just east of the observatory.

September 27th, 2007

The Classes of '33, '58, and '08 have received an invitation from the Class of '83 to the party that they are throwing preceding the Hampton game on Saturday October 6, 2007. The game starts at 3:30 pm, giving us plenty of time to party. The game will be televised CN8, so come out and show your spirit and your colors. Thanks to '83 for including us, and it would be great if we could get a good turnout from '58 on the scene. If the weather cooperates and we can wear our Reunion jackets, I think '83 would get a kick out of it. The party starts at 1:30 PM. More details to follow.

September 26, 2007

Princeton has lost a great Princetonian. We received the sad news that Josh Billings '33 has passed away. To all of us who had the great privilege of knowing him, it is a real loss. He was a wonderful person who did great things for Princeton, for medicine, for his family, and for all of us who had the privilege of spending time with him. He was a very special person. There is a wonderful article about him from Vanderbilt Medical School: Click here.

September 26th, 2007

Good things come to those who wait! For years we have been hoping that the Class of '83 would adopt our Reunion jacket, and just today we received the good news. Your humble servant has been extremely quiet on this matter, and has asked classmates not to push '83, as "they will not be pushed." It all worked out - they are going to adopt the jacket. Now '33, '58, and '83 will now be wearing the same Reunion jackets - how exciting! As a further note, the Class of 2008 is very interested in the pattern. Wouldn't that be wonderful!

I remember when we first walked on campus at our 25th with our jackets, how thrilled '33 was to see that we had adopted theirs. Over the years we have become extremely close to that wonderful class. It's been a privilege, and now the torch will be passed to '83. How wonderful!

Blair

September 24th, 2007

At 12:30 pm today, Margaret Miller, Director of the Alumni Association of Princeton, called and broke the news to me that we are being assigned Blair for our Reunion site.

This was somewhat disappointing as we were hoping to use our 50th Reunion to present Whitman College to the entire University, but this location could actually work out better for our Class. Blair is well up-campus, making it easier for class members to attend various functions (such as the P-rade, Alumni Faculty Forum, and memorial service,) and get to places such as Nassau Street, etc. In addition, an alternate courtyard is being opened, so that we may have access to quiet spaces and places for smaller bands right at our Reunion site. It would also be to our advantage that the site is quite level and familiar to members of the Class. It is a beautiful area, and although our hearts had been set on Whitman as the newest beautiful building on campus, Blair should work out very well for us.

The Reunion Committee will be meeting this weekend, and will visit the area and go over it very carefully. We will start to redesign our plans to fit into Blair's parameters. With the additional courtyard areas, we hope to be able to have all the musicians from New Orleans that were originally scheduled.

Actually, as I said above, Blair has some advantages over Whitman, so we will move forward with our plans to make this the best Reunion Princeton has ever seen.

August 23rd, 2007

Look at the 50th Reunion page and see what good things are happening because many in '58 have come forward in love to help people who have had a terrible two years. Please contact the Reunion Chair if you want to join in these good deeds.

August 18th, 2007

We are so far ahead of schedule on our Reunion Orders that it is almost impossible to believe. The Hats for the entire Class will be produced shortly-The undergraduates will be wearing their staff shirts this September-the Cocktail Glasses with the 50th Reunion Logo are going into production this week. The Reunion Yearbook is ready to go to press for delivery in early December as a Xmas surprise. Our Haberdasher reports that so many of you have ordered new jackets already-good for you! Our rooms that we know are available are all sold already, but more will be available shortly. The Bands are already practicing "Princeton" songs to amaze you. Al Bates has laid out exacting plans for the site already. In September final meetings with our caterers are on the agenda. And the innumerable other details are all under control. WOW!

August 8, 2007

Your humble servant has been a bit preoccupied these past number of weeks while some worn out knees were replaced with new beauties. There will be great dancing at our 50th, brought to you by some of New Orleans finest musical aggregations and this now guarantees our ability to join fully in all the terpsichorean opportunities.
Valuable news regarding foppery for the Fiftieth on the 50th Reunion Page.

Jerry Porter keeps his eye peeled for us-besides being an excellent Necrologist, he sometimes talks about happy things-or really interesting things like the attached about Buzzy Krongard

July 4, 2007

There is an interesting note about local hotel listings for the 50th reunion, on the 50th reunion page.

June 15, 2007

Here are some articles for our faithful readers.-What great stuff going on from '58-right?!

"James S. McDonnell III '58 and John F. McDonnell '60 have joined with the JSM Charitable Trust to make a $30 million gift to Princeton to establish the McDonnell Center for Systems Neuroscience. Teaching and research conducted by the center, which will be housed within the Princeton Neuroscience Institute, will investigate how the brain acquires, modifies and stores information during cognitive processes."
http://www.princeton.edu/main/news/archive/S18/12/55I34/

"Gordon Wu '58 returned to campus May 14 to celebrate 25 years of extraordinary support to the University, including funds to construct buildings, provide financial aid, endow faculty positions and support innovative research. Wu completed payments this year on a historic gift of $100 million that he pledged in 1995 to support the School of Engineering and Applied Science."

Please keep sending in your notes and ideas about our wonderful 50th Reunion. We're always interested in your thoughts. We are also still very interested in sponsorships. As stated previously, 1957's 50th Reunion was terrific, and we learned a lot from them. They were very gracious to all of us. Please go to the 50th Reunion page for our most recent updates.

June 4, 2007

The Reunions of 2007 have come and gone. Many of the Reunion Committee observed these events, hopefully gaining insights that will help make our 50th Reunion the best ever. We met more very capable undergrads who will be added to our staff. It was an exciting four days, but what will happen next year will be amazing!

If you look on the archived page for November 20th 2006, we wrote about Shelby Davis and what he has done for Princeton, many other Universities and our Class. Now his Mother, Kathryn Wasserman Davis, a graduate of Wellesley back in the 20's, and who earned her PhD from The University of Geneva and just turned 100, has established 100 Projects for Peace which give large awards to students to launch immediate initiatives during this summer with ideas for peace. This ties in perfectly with Shelby and Gales United World Scholars Program. Consequently we are all very proud to know these wonderful people!

May 6, 2007

Here is the schedule of 1957's 50th. They are our gracious hosts this year and next year they will be our guests. They have been excellent witrh their communications to us, and their gracious hopitality is very much appreciated.

When we announced the end of The Annex in Princeton a year ago we got many comments from our readers expressing how they had loved it. We have wonderful news today as the two people who work on this site went to "Sotto" last night-the restaurant that replaced The Annex, and it was really good! So things are working out-and when you come back to Princeton give it a try!

April 15th, 2007

Howard S Sussman has become of counsel to The New York City firm of Wrobel and Schatz, he has worked closely with them in the past. Their website is www.wandslaw.com Nice going Howard!

April 12, 2007

Today, on Royal Street in New Orleans there was a phenomenal street band which I was very impressed with. Not only were they great, but the trumpet player's name was Ben Polcer who just happens to be the son of our classmate Ed. I mean this group is really wonderful, and wouldn't it be nice if they could come to our Fiftieth! We're working on it.

April 10th, 2007

We think we have the answer to the problem many have had with this site-the music comes on too loud and many do not know that the sound could be adjusted by clicking the volume icon in the lower right corner of their computers. Now Forrest Collman has arranged a sound attenuator on each page so that our faithful readers can adjust each page to their wishes easily and visibly. We hope you like it-please tell us what you think. New technology has finally come up with the process we needed and we think Forrest has put it all together for you!

March 26th, 2007

We have made an AMAZING COUP by prepaying for a block of 50 rooms at The Hyatt. This offers Classmates an extraordinary rate at The Hyatt, the perfect and most convenient location for our Big Event. It is the best deal you will get by far, and they are excellent accommodations. Readers of this site who have already registered or register before the mailing goes out next week and request this have the first choice. There are only 40 rooms left, so grab this while you can!

March 11th, 2007

Look on the 50th Reunion Page for an update on Registrations. You'll be rather surprised!

March 5th, 2007

As most of you know, we have a lovely Orange Book where we have had The Class of '58 Sign In at all The Off Year Reunions since 1958. WELL-It's LOST! Does anyone remember where it might be, or give us a hint! We're checking with 1961-who were so nice to host us last year-but so far-no book. Call Bill Trimble-or write The Webmaster (Click on the front page of The Website) if you have an idea.

February 19th, 2007

‘57’s 50th Reunion is scheduled for May 31-June 3, 2007 in the Scully courtyard area. They are looking forward to welcoming members of the Classes of 1955,1956,1958,and 1959 and their guests at their celebration. The base fee for each satellite class will be $1,000. The class has paid this fee so the we can enjoy this event. The campus bed allocation will be three beds at $105 per bed.

The base fee will entitle our classmates to enjoy ‘57’s reunion site refreshments and entertainment as well as continental breakfast and lunch on Friday and Saturday.

Beginning Thursday, May 31, 2007, their student reunion crew will assist with registration tasks, issuing identification wrist bands, and assigning rooms to those with reservations.

February 12th, 2007

The response with early Registrations has been gratifying, and we notice a lot more hits on this site than usual. The message about what's on here is getting around! We're calling those people who still haven't sent in their yearbook write-up, as this is being printed so it's in your hands by this coming Xmas. Please understand that is SIX MONTHS BEFORE THE REUNION! This is a very extraordinary publication-so please call a friend to see if they have responded. We really need everyone included.

January 29, 2007

You may want to take a look at the December 28th newsnote on the Class of 33 page to learn about the etiology of their beer jacket.

January 27th, 2007

This morning The 50th Reunion Committee met in The Class of '52 Room at Frist and each person spoke on the part of the Reunion they are responsible for. We are in very good shape, and on The Fiftieth Reunion page we will tell you more about the meeting as soon as we gather more information from many of the participants. In the afternoon a large contingent from the class (The largest representation there by far) went to the meeting held by The Alumni Association to get the '08 Reunion planning processes in gear. Since we have been at work on this for almost two years (See previous newsnotes!) we felt mighty good about where we are.

January 4th, 2007

We've been given some Advance notice that The New York Dinner is scheduled for April 12th ,and the news is, at present, that Desaix Anderson will be at The Podium.

And, as you probably already know, the Seattle Mini is the 13th to the 16th of September.

December 31st, 2006

It has been an exciting year, lots of planning for our 50th, great response from many wonderful classmates who have come forward as sponsors, and exciting involvement of our undergraduate staff who will be right there with us at Reunions in 2008. Do look at the '33 page to see what that great group is up to. And have a wonderful 2007!
