Keeping Current '05

Dave's Digressions
The music you are listening to is
"It's Hard To Laugh or Smile" followed by "She's No Trouble" by Benny Moten's Kansas City Orchestra, recorded in September, 1928.
The second song may not be ready to play immediately, so please be patient!

HAPPY 2006!

December 31st, 2005
The year is ending on a fine note with the news that Ernie Chamberlin has recovered from some tough health issues to take over again as President and Reunion Chair for '33. This wonderful Class continues to symbolize all that we want to be with their fantastic attitude. On the Reunion page and the New Orleans page we bring you more nice thoughts about what lies ahead. And do have a Very Happy New Year!

December 25th, 2005

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

December 23rd, 2005
Today was The Annual Christmas Luncheon of The New Orleans Princeton Alumni Association, and if one had any doubt about the resurgence of New Orleans, or the type of student that Princeton has now, you needed to see this. The Plimsoll Club on the 30th Floor of The World Trade Center of New Orleans was resplendent, and 4 members of The Class of 2008 were there, as was one from 2009 and one from 2010! What a great group of people! Everyone present had a Katrina story, but the bond that is Princeton was very evident, and it bodes very well for our Mini Reunion in April, and our 50th which we will celebrate with 2008 as they will be graduating then and will join us in our celebration. More about all this on our 50th Reunion Page and our New Orleans Mini Reunion Page.

December 10th, 2005
Kal Ruttenstein died yesterday. The NY Times described him as one "Who kept Bloomingdales Chic". Kal was always in the news, and had a fantastic sense of style and could really lead influential people in his industry in a direction he felt would really work-and he was usually right. He was certainly a person who reached the top in his field; he had an extraordinary talent.

December 5th, 2005
There has been a wonderful outpouring of support for Our 50th. We had mentioned previously that to really make it an extraordinary event we needed some sponsorships, and that is happening and we are most appreciative of those classmates who have already come forward. There is more on this on the 50th Reunion Page, and some really interesting news on the New Orleans Mini Reunion Page.

November 24th, 2005

November 23rd, 2005
We have two really interesting notes; one for our Mini Reunion in New Orleans and one for our 50th Reunion, each on its own page, both of which you can find from here.

November 14th, 2005
A really nice event occurred before the Yale game on November 12th. We had told you about this in previous Newsnotes, but it was a wonderful experience when the Class of '08 showed up and introduced themselves to the Class of '58. They are delightful people and excited about the opportunity of bonding with us. This is just the beginning of many exciting events. We will keep you informed about them as we go along and hope that as many of you as possible can participate. This will all lead up to real bonding before our 50th Reunion.

We had the occasion to speak to a member of the Class of '52, Joseph Handelman, who led that project for his class. He said that even though the Class of '02 has graduated, they still keep in contact, and they are very familiar with them, and it is most enjoyable for both classes. We have a lot to look forward to.

November 10th, 2005
We are happy to announce that the recent article in the Alumni Weekly announcing the demise of our home in Bay St. Louis was in error. We have never been to Bay St. Louis, so there has been some cross communication on this. So thank you for your concerns, but there are people who really had trouble, and luckily we did not.

November 7th, 2005
As if the Class of 2008 were not enough reason to show your Stripes at the Yale Game this Saturday, let it be known that if the Tigers win this contest, Princeton will host their first celebratory Bonfire on Cannon Green in over 10 years! And as every True Fan knows, YOUR actions alone can determine the outcome of the Game!

November 7th, 2005
The Class of 2008 is preparing name tags so that members of both classes at the Yale Game get-together on the upper porch of CAP will be able to greet each other. We are very pleased with the great enthusiasm of '08 to meet all of us, and we hope that those of you who are reading this feel the same way. We hope as many of you as possible can come to this event. This will be the beginning of innumerable get-togethers between now and our Reunion in 2008 (also when 2008 graduates) so that our two classes will get to know each other extremely well by then. To make this clear, please scroll down and reread the News Note of October 28th.

November 6th, 2005
We have some terrific news about The 1958 New Orleans Mini on the New Orleans page. We urge you to look at it.

October 31st, 2005

October 29th, 2005
This Site will not be updated from October 29th to November 6th as the technical division is going on a Road Trip. Lots of news after that date, however, so stay tuned!

October 28th, 2005
A wonderful event will occur before the Yale Game on Saturday, November 12th as The Class of 1958 begins a series of events with The Class of 2008. This first party will occur on the upper porch of Cap and Gown Club; and if it gets too crowded we'll move some of it out to the side porch on ground level. We will gather anytime after 10:30, and hope you are all there by 11:30 to greet about 75 members of 2008 at 12. This is just the beginning of what will build up to our 50th, and 2008's graduation, of what will prove to be a grand event for all of us. Many of us remember meeting The Class of 1908 at their Reunion, and how gracious they were. That, in case you hadn't noticed, is a span of 100 years and how lucky we are to see all of this! Name Tags will be distributed, please wear them, and introduce yourselves to 2008 and spend time with them. They are excited to meet us (The 75 are just a small part of the class). Please bring some extra Soft Drinks, Sandwiches or Snacks and share them with our guests, and give them some real Princeton love, and please let them tell you about themselves. They are extraordinary.

October 27th, 2005
The chances that the New Orleans Gathering will happen are now excellent. We are reserving our final decision till November 8th as we told you previously, to make sure that every aspect is covered. There will be more updates on The New Orleans Page tomorrow, October 28th.

October 25th, 2005
The rebuilding of New Orleans has really started on a Grand Scale, and we're almost there with a "Yes" on the Princeton Event for April 3rd to 6th. See the New Orleans Page for some updates.

October 24th, 2005
The other night The American Orient Express was featured on a major channel, and it seemed like an astounding experience. And, as one might have guessed, the next night we received a call from The Lucius Beebe of '58, our Class President Bill Trimble, who was aboard and absolutely loving it. He was travelling from Reno to Denver at the time, and then he was to go on to other great places. Sounds fantastic, and a great way to really see some magnificent American vistas.

October 17th, 2005
New Orleans is an ongoing story-the spirit there is fantastic, the sights are devastating, but it will all make for a better New Orleans in the future. The Mini Reunion prospect looks good. More about all of this on The New Orleans Page.

October 14th, 2005
Fred Quitkin has passed away. He was The Director of the Depression Evaluation Service at The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University. Obviously a man of extraordinary accomplishments, he was noted in The New York Times Obituary Section, in part, as follows:

"He was a tireless clinical psychopharmacologist, never daunted by the most complex and difficult psychiatric disorders".

And furthermore:

"Recovery of full emotional health for his patients was ever his goal. His dedication and perseverance set an inspiring example for the pursuit of excellence in clinical research and therapeutic care".

October 5th, 2005
Vitaliy E. Elbert '08, has been selected by his Class President as the representative from The Class of 2008 to our class. We are going to work on a number of events together. They have already invited someone from our class to join them at a special dinner, and they will be with us at the Yale-Princeton game. We hope that in the next three years that we make a strong bond between the two classes so that at the Reunion we can warmly welcome them as alumni and they will feel comfortable and very familiar with us. For those of you who remember visiting with the Class of 1908 at their Reunion (as we were graduating) this is a very special privilege. We of 1958 are now going to be in the middle of this 100 year span, and what a great honor it is to have been able to meet both classes, and see what extraordinary people they are.

October 4th, 2005
An extraordinary group of undergraduates came to be interviewed last week for different positions as part of the undergraduate staff for our 50th Reunion in 2008. With the organizational prowess of Aaron Prescott '06, the man who runs all the technical aspects of this website, we advertised and found a fine group of people, and Aaron set the schedule for interviews. Your humble servant found Aaron's opinions of the candidate's invaluable as we evaluated them. We're going to do some second interviews, but we pretty well have an idea who we've got and who is going to do what. Do note that this is almost three years in advance of our Reunion. We will be working with these people to bring them up to speed so that by the time the grand event happens, they will certainly know what they are doing!

September 19th, 2005
Mike Kremzar writes:

"With your deep personal interest in New Orleans, I thought that you might be interested in what Procter & Gamble is doing about their plants and employees in NO. You may remember that my career was basically entirely with P&G so I maintain some contacts there. This note went out to a few friends around the country who had asked about the status. Specifically, the company has said that it is committed to staying in NO.

On a more general front, P&G has provided over $1 million in product and a similar amount in cash in the first week for the relief of victims. Products ranging from Pampers to Iams dog food are still flowing to appropriate agencies"

What wonderful news! Got to our New Orleans Page for more nice things (at last!)

September 17th, 2005
One of the the privileges of attending Princeton is that you get the opportunity to meet amazing people. And the other side of the coin is the fact that there are many you have never met, and then you wonder why. I just read in The Alumni Weekly of the death of Sanford B. Gabin, our classmate and obviously a brilliant guy, who I can honestly say I never can remember seeing or speaking to; and for that I am quite saddened. And that is the point that we constantly make about Reunions. It is why you might want to convince people who think it's not important in their lives to reconsider coming back. If they, or you, meet someone you have never really spoken to before, and find that the bond of Princeton brings you together and you like the experience, than make sure that you bring people back to say hello, and have a great time. I'm sorry I never met Sandy-he's gone and it's my loss.

September 16th, 2005
As part of our effort to move the Class of 1958 fully into the 21st Century, we are happy to present a Brand New Addition to the Class of 1958 Web Page: an Online Guestbook. Guestbooks (also known as Blogs) similar to this are quite popular on the Internet these days. Some of our eagle-eyed readers may have noticed the link at the top of the page for the past month or so, but the system is now ready for Prime Time! I encourage you to try out the Guestbook as a means to post comments or feedback regarding anything Class-related. It is simple to use, it works instantly from anywhere in the world, and we think it is absolutely wonderful! Be sure to check it often to see which Classmates have left messages.

September 15th, 2005
From now on we will be posting our New Orleans news, stories, and updates on the New Orleans News/Reunion page since there is so much to say that it warrants its own page. Be sure to check it for the latest Katrina/New Orleans news.

September 13th, 2005
Tom Tatum writes that he is safe and sound with friends in Bunkie, Louisiana. He had just moved into a house on Scenic Drive at Pass Christian which he hears is now gone, but the good news is they had not sold the old one which was one and a half miles back from the water and it is OK. His Cancer Treatments are a factor in his return to the Pass, but he is anxious to return. So we see that some people fight a lot of battles, and have a great attitude to pull them through all that has happened. What a guy.

September 11th, 2005
Life goes on, and here is a nice event which honors and celebrates the Life of Classmate whom everyone knew and loved. Click here to read about it.

September 8th, 2005
A note regarding the future of The New Orleans Mini Reunion is on that page.

September 8th, 2005
When things calm down a bit we'll put together a little personal story of what it was like to be part of the evacuation of New Orleans, to be taken in by a wonderful family up in Monroe Louisiana, and learn about the warmth and gracious hospitality of people in this country. The people of Monroe and their wonderful warmth is a story unto itself.

September 8th, 2005
We apologize for going "silent" during this critical time but circumstances prevented us from getting back on line till now. New Orleans is already beginning to recover, but it will be a long and painful period of healing.

September 8th, 2005
We are pleased to report to you that your faithful servant got out of New Orleans in time. The horrendous sights you see on television cannot begin to deliver the real punch in the gut that reality can give you. It is awful there, and I, for one, could never believe this country could perform so badly when we really needed a government that should be able to handle anything. After the horrors of September 11th (whose anniversary is in three days) we would have hoped we were better prepared and organized. It was very sad  for all America, but especially bothersome for those of us who think New Orleans is (was) a very special place. It may come back a better smaller city, but only time will tell. Let's all hope for the best.

August 26th, 2005
There will be interviews for undergraduate staff for our 50th Reunion, which is in 2008, at the end of September. The leader and assistant leader start very soon, as we do a lot of training and detail work earlier than you might expect. If any in the Class of '58 have relatives (or close acquaintances) in the Class of 2008 or 2009, or if you know of good candidates, please ask them to set up an interview time with us soon. We will be there on September 29th and 30th. Write us (or have them write us) at: davida58@alumni.Princeton.EDU so we might meet with them.

August 22nd, 2005
There is a lot going on with our Reunion Plans. We will have more about this in a few days, but suffice it to say we are in full swing, right on schedule, and will be having our first big committee meeting in about a month. We are also interviewing for undergraduate staff, and will be working closely with The Class of 2008 to plan events together. You might note that the Reunion is in THREE YEARS, but it takes that long to do something of this magnitude.

August 11th, 2005
Professor Christian Wildberg is an extraordinary teacher, and is "Quietly Appreciated" by so many at Princeton, in the academic community at large and those of us who have had the great pleasure of meeting him. Now you can learn, from him, about the many sayings you have seen all around the campus-The Epigraphy of Princeton. Click on the address below and have a great experience.

Address: http://tigernet.princeton.edu/education/epigraphy.asp

August 7th, 2005
At our 50th Reunion you will see some astounding musicians. As we go along here, you'll see more of them listed on these pages over the next few years. One who is sure to be there is Dan Levinson, one of the most brilliant clarinetists around. And if you want to hear some of his artistry, go to his web page: www.danlevinson.com and then click on "Sample Album Tracks" on the left. You will enjoy hearing them all, and the ones from his newest album "Crinoline Days" will knock your socks off.

July 26th, 2005
If you look on the 50th Reunion page, you'll see the first formation of the 50th Reunion Committee, which will be getting together in early September 2005, three years ahead of the big event. This group is still in formation, and we are very interested in additional help from other people. The group, of course, will get larger as we move forward. John Kuhlthau as Vice Chair will be running all the Committee meetings, and interfacing with administrative affairs on campus. John was a judge for a long time and knows how to deal with "everything"!

We're interested in comments, ideas, etc. from all of you. Most importantly, we want you to love your 50th Reunion. Please keep writing to us by e-mail or snail-mail, and keep those ideas coming. We listen to everyone, and even though we may not be able to do all you ask, we certainly do pay attention.

July 25th, 2005
We recently attended a fabulous Independence Day concert by the New Leviathan Orchestra of New Orleans featuring an entire show devoted to the authentic writings of John Philip Sousa. It was one of the most patriotic shows one could imagine, made even more meaningful by recent tragic world events. This 17 piece orchestra will be playing during the dinner at the Preservation Resource Center on the second night of the New Orleans Mini-Reunion. I can't describe how great this group is - you have to hear it to believe it!

We are presently able to accommodate a few more people in the New Orleans Mini-Reunion. If you or anyone you know would still like to sign up, please send in your deposit of $545 per person ASAP to:

Maggie Bruno
66 High Street
Guilford, CT 06437

We need to put down deposits on activities in New Orleans for the Mini-Reunion well in advance, as New Orleans is a very busy city, and spaces fill up fast!

July 24th, 2005
Dr. Paul Miles is now teaching History at Princeton. Dr. Miles had a 30-year career in the military, received his PhD, and has now come to Princeton at 61 years of age and is already a very popular professor. When some start to believe that Princeton does not have a broad spectrum of teachers and philosophies, it might interest those of you who seem concerned about what you perceive as the views of the administration; that between Paul Miles teaching History, and Dr. Ruth Westheimer also having some of the most popular courses on campus, your concerns might just disappear.

July 13th, 2005
Once again we have a great letter from John Harman on the '33 Page, and a copy of their newest newsletter. Wonderful, isn't it!

July 7th, 2005
Our hearts and condolences go out to those affected by the terrorist attacks in London this morning.

July 7th, 2005
Jerry Porter noticed that our notes on the French Quarter Festival in New Orleans said that it was following our Mini Reunion in New Orleans which is April 3 to 6th in 2006. He pointed out that The Festival is listed as April 21-23rd on their website, and he is obviously correct. When we wrote the letter about the Mini we were told by Festival Staff that The Festival was scheduled for April 7th to the 9th. They (we) apologize for this error, but the people who join us in April will have so much great Music that they should be very happy anyway.

July 4th, 2005

HAPPY 4TH!

June 25th, 2005
The Class of 2005 has almost 9 percent going into teaching at secondary schools, 5 per cent have gone to assignments through Project '55 and The Salutatorian, Graham Phillips, a history major, is reporting for duty in The US Army and will start basic training shortly. His adviser, Jennifer Weber said: "What makes this man extraordinary...is his maturity and his deep sense of responsibility. Of the many undergraduates I have met at Princeton, I have never met one who so exemplified, at this age, "Princeton in The Nation's Service". So you see, Princeton gets more amazing all the time and the production line keeps turning out better and better products year after year.

June 24th, 2005
At the end of this month Steve Podos will step down as The Chair of The Department of Ophthalmology at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine after THIRTY YEARS in that position! Steve is certainly one of the most respected people in that entire field. He also has three daughters who all went to Princeton and now has a son in law from The Class of 1985. I can not think of anyone in Medicine who has held such a prestigious chair for this length of time, and I would also guess (do correct me if I'm wrong) that Steve is at the top of the "Progeny at Princeton" list in The Class of 1958. Wow!

June 22nd, 2005
On May 6th, (below) we told you that Chris Clutz was coming to the end of the line, and on May 19th the battle he bravely fought for so long, ended. We apologize for being so late in reporting this, but we were in a sort of electronic lockdown for a while and really did not get the news right away and then couldn't get it out to our readers. Chris was a very special guy and we will all remember wonderful things about his life, his will to live, and his battle to keep it going as long as it was possible.

June 18th, 2005
We're happy to present a new Page on this Site with a lot of the wonderful Songs of Princeton. We hope you like it.

June 18th, 2005
The Class of 1955 showed that long range planning, a terrific committee, and having fun working on it makes for a Great Reunion. The 50th Reunion is now bigger than the 25th was. In other words, if this trend continues, more people will return to our 50th than came to our 25th! And you will see, if we can continue this trend, that people who have never come back since 1958 will join us in this celebration. Dan Unterman, the Registrar and Treasurer of our 50th, and John Kuhlthau our Vice Chair met with David Greenberg, the 50th Chair, to continue work on our scheduling and planning during this last Reunion weekend. By the way, our 50th Reunion plan was started shortly after our 45th ended in 2003. The Class of '55 has graciously invited the three of us to join them at their wrap up meeting in the fall, to learn a lot of what they did to make it so successful. In our next News Note you will learn a little about the Graduating Class of 2005. Stay tuned!

June 17th, 2005
We apologize to our regular readers, but due to some scheduling difficulties we were not able to get through technically to update you on the news. We'll play catch up ASAP.

May 17th, 2005
Norman David Kurtz died in the early morning on Friday, May 13, 2005 at his home in Scarsdale New York. Norman seemed to be one of the healthiest guys in the Class; he exercised regularly, and as Fred Perkins said in one of the eulogies presented, he was in outstanding physical condition, living and loving life to the fullest. Norman was Phi Beta Kappa and Graduated Magna Cum Laude at Princeton, and returned to Princeton as a Professor of Engineering in the Architecture Department for almost 20 years. The company he founded, Flak and Kurtz, became world famous. Irwin Silverberg, who gave the other eulogy, said that he had an incredible ability to focus and concentrate. He had a wonderful loving family who often joined him at Princeton Reunions. He will be missed by all of us.

May 16th, 2005
Bill Trimble reports that he E-mailed his spring Class letter (to all of us) to the Alumni Council Office on the 27th of March. Also included was a letter from Bill Fortenbaugh regarding mini reunions. Bill T's inquiry of the person responsible for mailing Class letters resulted in the assurance that it was mailed, First Class, on  April 15th.

When no letter showed up,  Bill again called the Alumni Council office to report the problem. He checked by telephone across the country over a week ago, and no one had still received the letter. His inquiry on the 14th of this month did not elicit a definitive answer from the person who had earlier assured him it was mailed on the 15th of April. Stand by.

May 11th, 2005
Berit Smith reports she has just seen the musical "The Pursuit of Persophone" based on "This Side of Paradise" and there was a lot of Princeton and Triangle stuff in it. It will be playing May 14-15th, and the 21st and 22nd at The Connelly Theatre on 220 East 4th Street, Between Avenues A and B. She really liked it and the tickets were $15.00, which for NYC is almost amazing.

May 6th, 2005
We just got off the phone with Barbara Clutz and she said that Chris is really losing his battle with ALS now. He has fought so valiantly for an amazingly long time. So many of you have asked about him over the years.  Chris told Barbara that he had discovered that the mind is the window of the soul, and since it really is the one thing that he still has, he wanted her to know it will continue on even after the battle is over. Barbara and the whole family are all there supporting that great guy right now, and it sure has to give us all pause to think about the blessings one has, and that love can assuage a lot of the physical travails that some suffer. Our thoughts and love go out to this great guy and to all around him.

May 3rd, 2005
If you'll read the News Note just below this one, you will see that in the spirit of "Anything for Princeton" we were at The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and we are happy to tell you we discovered and "Rediscovered" groups that were playing the music so many of you asked for, and you will see-at our 50th in 2008, bands you will be amazed to see that are both superb musicians and really nice people. One or two of these groups will be at our New Orleans Mini Reunion next year so that those of you who come to that can tell all your friends that "You Won't Believe It!" and convince everyone you know to come to our "Last Big One" in 2008. We will have an extraordinary mix of musical styles there, and every single person who is with us in 2008 will be totally pleased that they got what they wanted.

The Classes of '33 (75th), '83 (25th), and 2008 will love it too, and we are looking forward to see 75 years of Princeton Graduates at their (and our) Major Reunion (and Graduation!) having a great time together.

April 29th, 2005
Your humble servant is toughing it out down in New Orleans at the absolutely huge New Orleans Jazz Festival, where we are looking for entertainment for our 50th. As you are aware New Orleans promotes all different types of music now. We are trying to find some of the names that were famous when we were in school, and the styles that were popular then. The amount of different styles played here is overwhelming, but we will persevere to be sure that in 2008 we put on a 50th Reunion the likes of which Princeton has never seen before.

April 15th, 2005
Happy Tax Day! As we prepare for '58's 50th we thought you might like to put some things in the context of where we were then. Today is the 50th Anniversary of  McDonalds, and The 75th Anniversary of McCarter Theatre at  Princeton. Fifty Years ago the star performer there was Marcel Marceau, but we were all too busy to go over there and see him. And on another note, the Class of 2009 has just received their acceptance letters, and the Class will be almost 50% bigger than ours was then.

March 28th, 2005
On April 16th the Class is invited-(by The Class of 2008!) to a wonderful event. Do try to join them if you can, and meet the people who will be graduating and celebrating with us at our 50th in 2008. This is a wonderful idea they have, and hopefully '58 will have a fine turnout. Wear your Reunion Jackets if you can and see what you looked like 50 years ago. Click here to view their Invitation!

March 27th, 2005

Happy Easter!

March 23rd, 2005
Another amazing event hosted by Annual Giving, where Bill Hardt '63 eloquently explained, once again, "Why Giving Matters", was held last night to honor that Region that has the highest percentage of participants nationwide. This same region, in Connecticut, has won that award for 14 years now. Graduates from every decade spoke, starting with Jim Bensen'36, and going through to present day classes, and introducing a member of '09 who will be starting next fall. It was a special treat to meet Rebecca Armstrong '74 and John Armstrong '67, as they have a daughter Anne Armstrong '08 who will be celebrating her graduation with us as we celebrate our 50th Reunion. Princeton really is a very big family, and the Armstrongs exemplify that on a very personal level.

March 17th, 2005

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

March 3rd, 2005
We are trying to get all members of our class involved in using computers. It is sad that so many people our age who had a great education refuse to move into this century. Princeton University uses electronic communication totally and has hard copy only as backup. It really is the only way they communicate. The Internet is also a great place to get information and super bargains (i.e. airfares, etc). Look at The Class of '33 web page - run by alumni well into their nineties who are driven to keep up with current technology. They say it helps keep their minds young! Let's work to get all members of the Class of 1958 into the 21st century. Unfortunately I'm preaching to the choir here, but do your friends a real favor and try to get them to expand their horizons.

March 1st , 2005
Yesterday we posted the registration forms and outline of events for the 2006 New Orleans Mini Reunion. As faithful readers of this website, you received this information well before hard copies were sent to the entire class. I strongly urge you to sign up as we are sure this event will be a sell out. Here is an example where being "electronically connected" is a real advantage!

March 1st , 2005
At the Annual Giving Dinner at Princeton a few days ago, our Classmate Russell Riggs was honored as leading his region to the best per capita returns of any region. We look forward to seeing you at our 50th Reunion, where you can personally congratulate Russell. He has done a great job in the Louisville Region.

February 22nd, 2005
At the beginning of next week, on February 28th, we will put up the "Provisional" plan for The New Orleans Mini Reunion. Those of you who read this website regularly will be ahead of the game if you sign up early, as this will clearly be a sellout. We believe this is the real lead in to our 50th, so there has been a great effort to make this really special. It will induce you to tell all your friends to join us in Princeton in 2008 for an award winning (we will!) Reunion that will be like nothing Princeton has ever seen.

We hope as many of you as possible will be at The Service of Remembrance in The University Chapel at 3PM this coming Saturday, February 26th. Of all the events that Princeton has, this one has the most meaning, and is something you have to see to believe. You will never have a better understanding of Princeton University and the respect it has for all of us who have had the very great privilege of being a part of it.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!

February 11th, 2005
In just 15 days, on Saturday, February 26th, you can come to Princeton and be part of Alumni Day. It is packed with all sorts of really interesting activities, but the real centerpiece is The Service of Remembrance in The Chapel at Three in the afternoon. It is an amazing experience where we honor those who have left us, and it will touch you with the extraordinary way Princeton honors its own. If you can make it, you will be rewarded with a very special hour.

A recent visit with Bruce Raeburn at the Tulane Jazz Archives in New Orleans was extraordinarily interesting. Bruce will be one of the featured speakers during our Mini Reunion in New Orleans, April 3rd to 6th, 2006. We also met his wonderful wife Linda Carroll, Class of 1971, who is an outstanding scholar in Venetian dialect and studies. Linda was one of the very first women to graduate from Princeton, and you will be extremely impressed when you meet her.

For those of you who are interested, the Tulane Jazz Archives Library will be opened during our visit, and you might want to stop by and see it.

On January 13th Bruce Carrick, who will be in charge of The Class of 1958 50th Anniversary Yearbook, Bill Trimble, the Class President, and myself, David Greenberg, The 50th Reunion Chairman, met and discussed some of our plans. The Yearbook will be a totally separate function from the Reunion, and no one is more qualified to do this than Bruce. He already has some wonderful ideas in the works. The Yearbook is the first thing that has to get started, as it takes a long time to produce, and he will need input from every member of the Class.

The next day I met with Dan Unterman, who will be the Treasurer and Registrar for the 50th Reunion. Dan already has systems in place and is ready to start the process. We have also been in frequent contact with Al Bates, who will be doing all our site planning. After almost 42 Years at Princeton doing this kind of organizational and engineering work, Al certainly knows exactly what to do. As you can see, the 50th Reunion is a major event, and we are working to be sure we have adequate time to make The Class of 1958 50th Reunion one that is spectacular and one that YOU will never forget.

Please be sure to check out the newly posted Winter 2004 Edition of the '33 Tiger Club News in the Class of '33 page, courtesy of John Harman '33! We've put it up in the same format as the original (doublesided) to give the most authentic newsletter experience possible. Enjoy!

Arrangements and contracts have been signed at the Pontchartrain Hotel in New Orleans for our mini-Reunion set for April 3-6, 2006. The price is $119/night (fantastic!), and even though we are not yet able to give a price for whole reunion, we suggest you call the hotel (1-800-777-6193) and book room reservations under "The Princeton Group" special price. This will sell out, and the rooms will be hard to come by. Even though this reservation will be well over a year in advance, it is not too early to get aboard!

One of the more exciting things we do on this site is to update you on the Class of '33. Their most recent newsletter, The '33 Tiger Club News Winter 2004, is being electronically reproduced and will soon be seen on the Class of '33 section of this site. The active, vibrant people involved in producing this newsletter are well into their nineties, and keep the great spirit of '33 going. What a standard they have set!

Princeton Wrestling is celebrating 100 years. The ad above was drawn and designed by Bill Fortenbaugh. All are welcome at the centennial, and anyone who has not seen the Class of 1958 Wrestling Room will have the opportunity to view the facility.
