The music you are listening to is
"A Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong, followed by another version of the same song by Milton Batiste.
The second song may not be ready to play immediately, so please be patient!

Thanks to all of you who have supported this site over the past year with your nice comments and appreciative notes. Thanks for the fine technical help from many people over the past 3 years. Thanks to the authors and performers of the great music that was written a long time ago that makes this site really different. Thanks to Adam Friedlander '01, the terrific undergraduate at Princeton who puts all this up on the site; he makes doing this fun for me.
Merry Christmas and an Especially Happy New Year to all of you. As of this morning we have nearly 1500 hits, and when we're next back on line, it will be The 21st Century, with great promise of wonderful things ahead. And last but not least, thanks to Princeton for bringing us all together, for helping us to think and to better enjoy the wonders of Our Great Nation and the World.

Chris Clutz called to tell me that Sarge Karch has just passed away after a tough couple of years with Cancer, where he put up one grand battle to hold on. Chuck Wittmann, Joe Croft and Thor Halvorson went to the Memorial Service today with Barbara Clutz at St. Albans in Washington, DC. Another fine guy has left us.

November 23rd, 1999
The Yale Game was fun for all of us who went. There was a nice crowd out this year- lots of guys who are returning more often as they have more time now to enjoy themselves. Year after next I'll bet we get nearly 100!

November 21st, 1999
Jo Johnson (sic) took some of us on a fascinating tour of the new buildings on the campus. Many of us fear the overbuilding and the seemingly wildly diverse architecture that is occurring on the campus. Well-after 2 hours with Jo one gets totally immersed in the really careful plan that they have, and the wonderful way they are preparing for tomorrow. It was a great experience for all of us who took the tour.

November 20th, 1999
The Conference held at Princeton to "Enthuse" Volunteers was excellent and got us all reinvigorated. Your faithful servant spoke there (talking about this Website!) on one of the panels. It's nice to face the group from the other side of the room (i.e. The Speakers Platform) after the endless hours in McCosh in the same room being lectured at!

November 9th, 1999
In case you don't know , most of the Class of '58 gathers on the upper porch of Cap and Gown before the Yale Game. Sometimes the party is good enough that we don't get to the Stadium before Half Time, if at all. Please join Us!

November 8th, 1999
Before you read this, please read the news note of October 25th,
below ------ Now that you have read that, I'm pleased to share the nice news that all of Chris's wonderful Family will be on a Grand Cruise through the Panama Canal, just before it changes hands, to celebrate The Millennium. Catherine'88 is coming in from her home in Brussels to join them. We're all proud of your terrific efforts Chris, and we wish you great and justly deserved joy on that special voyage.

The Mini-Reunion at Cordie and Charlie Puttkamer's beautiful Inn ended today. All the attendees had a really wonderful time. We'll tell you more about it in a few days.  The Yale Game is next weekend and we'll gather once again for another really fun time. We look forward to a great turnout this year.

October 30th, 1999
A Wonderful Family is a great thing, and no one knows that better than Warren Davis. I really got to know Warren through his wonderful son Greg's ('00) association on our Undergraduate Reunion Staff. Even with the restraints of Parkinson's, Warren enthusiastically joined our committee and was of invaluable help in getting out the great attendance we had at our 40th. I really saw how Sigrid, Mary (who had just graduated Wellesley) and Greg helped him through the tough constraints of that disease. Warren told me some of what it was like to have that terrible scourge and to know exactly how you act and appear and know you can't do anything about it.  Now Warren has had another really unfortunate incident as a result of Parkinson's.  Kim, Warren's daughter is a highly respected physician in Chicago, and has come back on a regular basis to see to it that he has the best care, and to guide his fantastic wife Sigrid through all this. Warren is a really special and great guy, and the entire class is cheering for him.

October 29th, 1999
On September 4th Philip Adler, Jim's son suggested a code change to fix the music so that it would be easier for some of you to hear it. It worked and we really are thankful for his interest.  Michael Fortenbaugh '85, the Commodore and Founder of The Manhattan Yacht Club (Bill's son), wrote me that his whole office was listening to the music on this site the other day. It's really wonderful to know we have some of The Class of 1933 looking at this as well as some of our fantastic progeny! I know some people at Oxford are looking at it, and even a few Yalies! Not Bad!

October 28th, 1999
I saw Bruce Rabbino at a party the other day, and he is involved in buying and selling hi-end cooperatives and townhouses in New York City with Charles Greenthal. If you need a place to drop your coat and hat when you are in NYC, Bruce can get you a doozy! His address is on the class Email Page.

October 26th, 1999
Frederick Hodges is getting his Ph.D. in Medical History at Oxford. He took us around last week where we visited their development office. They may have set the standard that Princeton saw as an academic goal, but as they said, now they look to places like Princeton for how to develop The Alumni as a really active group. What you are looking at here(Our Website) is what we were talking about as they are interested in how we do this. It's nice to give back to Oxford, as I admire them as the standard set for us a long time ago.  Frederick has his own recording which was recently released. Of course everyone in the class has a great rendition of his work on The Reunion CD, but if you want more of what he does, get "Turn on The Heat" You can order it from Stomp Off Records, P.O. Box 342, York, PA, or through Amazon.Com

October25th 1999
Cris Clutz and I were talking and he told me that Chris'89 is getting his Ph.D. at Rensselaer in Mechanical Engineering. It's nice to be able to address your son as "Sir."

Right after our 40th Chris discovered that he had some really serious health problems. Chris is having a tough go of it these days and I know we're all hoping for the best for this really wonderful guy.  His wonderful Barbara is at his side, helping him, as best she can, through all this. His phone number is 561 336 3237. His address is 1506 NW Sawgrass Way; Palm City, Florida 34990.

I am happy to report that your humble servant has just returned from Paris where all the test questions on the Art Courses we had in the late 50's are in now on display in The Museum d'Orsay which is well worth a visit. The people in Paris still Strike on every topic, have Demonstrations on a moments notice, and are no longer rude to Americans. Now they are just primarily rude to each other.

Besides his great pride in the accomplishment referred to in our October 10th news note, Bill Fortenbaugh can tell you about son Peter's extraordinary success with "Exodus", the company that maintains WebPages for major corporations all over the world. It's nice to have a son who can buy and sell you before he's 30.

On Saturday, February 19th, 2000, at 5:00PM The Wrestling Team returns to Jadwin Gym and they will dedicate "The Class of 1958 Wrestling Room" and we hope to have a nice turnout of the class for this occasion. Hanging permanently in the room will be our Class Picture from our 30th. If you have one, you'll see why it was chosen. So you see, everything has turned out nicely, and everyone is happy.

October 9th,'99
In case you hadn't noticed The Scotts Company is booming under Chuck Berger's leadership. Have you been to a Home Depot lately and seen the label all over the store, from tractors to all sorts of different supplies?  I just saw a Scotts Residential Service truck in downtown Washington last week, right near The White House! While some of us are slowing down, Chuck seems to be speeding up. Need a stock tip? I just gave you one.

October 7th '99
Yesterday we had another wonderful Class Dinner at The Hay Adams in Washington. There was a fine turnout and Leo Welt had us all seated around a gloriously long (and wide) table so that we could all see each other and communicate. Leo has each person reintroduce themselves so we know what they are presently up to, and we generally get (as was apparent yesterday) lots of pleasant visitors, wives and partners. Shelby Davis was the speaker and there were lots of questions from the group as people looked for great ways to make sure that the investments they had went only in one direction.  The answer, obviously, was to invest in The Davis Funds.

October 1st '99
There was a fine event at The Woodrow Wilson House in Washington on September 30th, where Princeton Graduates from all classes and The Grad School are invited to annually celebrate Wilson's devotion to Princeton. The more I visit that beautiful home, the more impressed I become with what it means to all of us. Wilson really had the vision to make Princeton a great institution. 1958 is especially honored at Wilson College where we held our 40th, as the class gave a special gift to say thank you for their cooperation. In Washington you can see the academic robes that he proudly wore still hanging in his closet At Princeton you can see the embodiment of his brilliant vision at Wilson College, where today's students live and interact exactly as he planned it. When you are in Washington do visit his home at S street, and when in Princeton revisit Wilson College and see it in every day action. While in Washington you also might want to go a little further up Massachusetts Avenue to the magnificent National Cathedral where Wilson now rests. A beautiful Princeton Flag stands in the arch behind his tomb.

I recently had a visit from someone in the "Fund Raising" Division at Princeton, and she was extraordinarily interested in what a lot of you really feel. I was very touched by a very lovely letter I received, and it gives me great hope that Princeton can get even better when all of us understand that our goals are all the same; to make A Great University even greater. Money isn't the only way that you give back to Princeton, and there are people there who really understand that.

September16, 1999
The Class certainly seems to be communicating with each other a lot more all the time. We really enjoy hearing from all of you. Please tell your friends who do not have their Email addresses listed to put them on here. You certainly know that this is not something a lot of the classis really "in to" yet, but don't worry, they'll catch up with us soon. Remember that this is relatively "new" to many of them, but with the newer and more powerful computers, they'll be here soon. I even get letters from the Class of 1933 through this site!  Frankly, when I was running a Corporation a few years ago, I never would "touch" these things, but now that the big staff is gone, I love it and do more with it now then the large computer staff could do then.  Not only are the programs and equipment easier to use, but we really want it to be simple, and that was not what people with "job security" had on their minds then. I keep telling people who can't understand these things to ask young kids how to do it. They really know it best!
(Note: I guess I'm preaching to the choir if you are already reading this!)

We're sorry that after we made 10 proof readings of our text, (and even had Bill Trimble, who is more of a perfectionist than I am, check it) someone at the printers (for no apparent reason except to put in more time)  decided to retype the entire letter I wrote to the class, and then made 4 mistakes:
1. The Neelys (listed at the bottom of  page 1) live in Petaluma, not Petalumna.
2. The word "over" was originally at the bottom of Page 1.
3. On page 2, the first paragraph, 4th line; the word is "music", not "musit".
4. My Email address in the 6th line, 1st paragraph of page 2 is misprinted.  It is davida58@ct1.nai.net

Hugh Fairman  told us that a really neat thing you might want to go to is the first night football game ever, (in The Ivy League) will be at Princeton on September 25th. Hugh is the man to call for more information. He lives in Princeton now, so if you're  ready to see another moment for the record books, give him a ring for more information.

The search for a new  Director  at The Alumni Council continues and they are interested in input. If you have some thoughts you can send them  to us here on our interactive page, or call us and discuss them. We'll be glad to get them to the right parties.

For those of you who are interested, the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra will be performing at the Great Connecticut Traditional Jazz Festival in Moodus, CT which will take place on August 6-7-8, 1999.  For Festival Tickets, Weekend Packages, Special Events and General Information call: 1-800-HOTEVENT.

For the tremendous reception the Royal Society got at Princeton and for the numerous classmates who have attended the Festival, this might be a good opportunity to see them again.  Even though I started the Jazz Festival in 1986, I have nothing to do with the current management of it, but when a group as worthwhile as the Royal Society comes East from San Francisco, it's worth seeing.  I'm happy to announce that the stages are still painted orange and black, but that will eventually change as the Director is now Joel Schiavone, Yale '58.  So I guess we know what the colors may be in the future.

The letters I get from 1933, still remembering their 65th and how they joined with us for some of our events, are really wonderful. Some of these men are 90, because they went to school at a  later age, but most are (only!)  88. I really should get permission to put some of the letters on this page so you can read them. They are an amazing group of  people with a wonderful attitude and obviously a great appreciation of life. The association with them has been  a great experience for me.

June29th 1999
I went to Danville, Kentucky two weeks ago, to The Great American Brass Band Festival to start to think about who we need at our 50th. All The Great Brass Bands in the world go there, including, for example, The United States Army Band from West Point. So, guess who is the most popular band there-bar none- but the band we've had join us many times: The Olympia Brass Band of New Orleans.  They had  many thousands of  people going nuts over them Saturday Night. As some great mind said once: "It Don't Get No  Better Than This!"

June20th, 1999
As of today we have over 500 "Hits" on our web page. I'm glad you're looking (AND LISTENING!!) to it. We're trying to keep it current, and make it fun to look at and listen to. We appreciate your notes of appreciation for this site.

We're glad the CD was such a hit. We'll soon be posting addresses of the bands you've asked for so you can order CD's directly from them if you wish. For those of you who missed the 40th, it's a chance to hear a sample of what was played there. For those of you who were there, and didn't get them at the time, this will give you another opportunity.

June11
Here's a nice note from Bob Phillips I thought you would like to read. If you look at how many hits we get on our front page, I guess a lot of people check us out. Frankly, and without embarrassment, I really think if we don't win some sort of prize for this thing, at least they'll have to admit it makes the BEST MUSIC!!

"Dave,
The class web page is now marked as one of my favorites. I read it every week.  I received the CD which is great. Please put my email address in the page:  raphill@alumni.princeton.edu. The mini reunion on Margarita is going to be great. Hope you can make it. I saw the note on it in the web page.  You may want to add in the web page that I will be in Harrison, New York July 8 - September 8 at telephone/fax914.835.4804 if anyone wants to talk to me directly about the mini reunion. After September 8 I will be in Margarita at telephone/fax 58.95.670040.

Best regards,

Bob"

The Class Dinner at Cap and Gown was great fun, but Bill Fortenbaugh was missed by all. When the University Band arrived they  were reallysorry he wasn't there. Bill just sent me a card from Europe saying it really upset him to not have been able to come. I guess we won't have that problemagain-now it is a real necessity  that he makes it for his sake and for all of us who care so much for him!! We need you there Bill!!

June5, 1999
The Washington DC Dinner will be held on Thursday, October 7th at the Hay-Adams Hotel. It is an elegant setting, and Leo Welt always makes sure that it is a very convivial event. We are all seated at one large table, everyone joins into the conversation, and it's fun!  Leo always chooses a speaker that has to be good, because it is already an active evening when it's time for that, and it's hard to get people to pay attention, but they do!

May 19,1999
A  Mini Reunion is planned in Venezuela, organized by Bob Phillips, for February 26th, 2000. The mailing sent to the class last week told all about it. We'll put more about it on the Web page  soon.

May19, 1999
The Class will be marching next week in The P-rade, and we'll miss our Cheerleader, Bill Fortenbaugh who is in Europe. I figured he'd fly back (he never misses it) but  last week I got a message that he can't make it. But you never know, the pressure may mount, and all of a sudden he'll be there!

May2, 1999
We always have a warm, fun evening on all the off years on the Friday Night of Reunions at Cap and Gown. If you've never been there, do it-you will find it to be just wonderful; and I have never met anyone-even if it was the first time they went, who didn't think it was just great.. Charlotte McLaughlin has been running this beautifully for many years.

May1, 1999
A number of really fine Mini Reunions are being planned. I know of one at Charlie Puttkammer's place (It's Beautiful!) in  early November, and we'll put more on here as we learn  more about it and of others.

April25, 1999
The Class dinner in NY was not all we would have liked to have seen as to attendance; but it was nice to see those who came.  Steve Podos showed why he became Chairman of a very prestigious Department of a Medical School by gently and capably handling the questions of a challenging audience. Any suggestions as to why attendance is off so much would be appreciated. Any Thoughts?

April5, 1999
Everyone who has received their class of 1958 glasses, loves them! All feedback has been wonderful!  Click hereto order now!
Also, please send in your e-mail address if it is not already listed.

March25, 1999
One disappointing aspect at our 40th was when the Project 55 people came to talk to us about "Princeton in the Service of all Nations", our attendance was very poor.  It's possible that our publicity for this was not good, but the attendance was really embarrassing.  We've also noticed that when certain topics were brought upàwe did not have a good response.  There is some concern whether the Class as a whole really wants to get involved in these kind of projects.

March2, 1999
I am personally very pleased that Bern Deichmann has volunteered to take over as Reunion Chairman for our 45th.  He is very capable, and has worked closely with me for all these years and besides his excellent organizational talents, he is also Holly Deichmann's father.  As far as Reunions go that is probably one of his greatest achievements as Holly clearly was an absolutely outstanding manager at our 30th.  I told Bern that the best possible advice he could get is from Holly, she was(and is) fantastic!  By the way Holly is out on the West Coast and is now a Yale trained architect.

February25, 1999
I regularly correspond with Ernie Chamberlain, Reunion Chairman, Class of '33.  Ernie tells me how thrilled members of his class are to be involved with us.  They find it really invigorating.  They've enjoyed sharing reunions with us and as soon as the Reunion CD is produced, all the members of the Class of '33 who came to reunions want a disc or a cassette tape and we are going to get it for them.  They really are a Great Strong Class!
