Come join us again at People! We'll be converging in the newly renovated loft upstairs at People for a special series of readings by out authors.

Robert Klitzman, "Mortal Secrets: Truth and Lies in the Age of AIDS"
"Mortal Secrets" was penned by Robert Klitzman and Ronald Bayer. Drawing from interviews with over seventy gay men and women, intravenous drug users, sex workers, bisexual men, and heterosexual men and women, the book provides a detailed portrait of moral, social, and psychological decision-making. The interviews convey the complex emotions of love, lust, longing, hope, despair, and fear that shape individual dilemmas about whether to disclose to, deceive, or trust others concerning this disease. Some of those interviewed revealed their diagnosis widely; others told no one.
Robert Klitzman, M.D., is an assistant professor in the department of psychiatry and is co-director of the Center for Bioethics at Columbia University. He is the author of The Trembling Mountain: A Personal Account of Kuru, Cannibals and Mad Cow Disease (2001), In a House of Dreams and Glass: Becoming a Psychiatrist (1996), Being Positive: The Lives of Men and Women with HIV (1997), and A Year-long Night: Tales of a Medical Internship (1989). He is a member of FFR/Princeton BTGALA.

David Allyn, "I Can't Believe I Just Did That"
David's book examines the subtly damaging effects of embarrassment on our everyday lives and offers powerful advice for identifying and managing those effects. Though written for everyone, this book resonates particularly strongly for the LGBT community.
David Allyn, Ph.D. is a Harvard-trained social scientist. A visiting scholar at the Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy at Columbia University, Allyn has written essays that have appeared in The Journal of American Studies, the New York Times Magazine, The Washington Post, and other publications. David has also lectured at Princeton University. He is a member of Harvard Gay and Lesbian Caucus.

Peter Allen, "Driving Mr. Cohn"
"Driving Mr. Cohn" is an article about Peter's experience as a chauffeur for the infamous lawyer Roy Cohn, a major character in Tony Kushner's Angels in America. It was published in the New York Times, December 7, 2003.
Peter Allen, Ph.D., has degrees from Haverford College, University of Chicago, University of Poitiers, and the Wharton School and has taught at Princeton University and Pomona College. He is the author of The Art of Love: Amatory Fiction from Ovid to the "Romance of the Rose" (University of Pennsylvania Press, 1992) and "The Wages of Sin: Sex and Disease, Past and Present" (University of Chicago, 2000). He is the VP for Communications for Out for Business, the LGBT alumni group of the Wharton School.

The readings will begin promptly at 7:00 pm. There will be an opportunity for question and answers after the reading. There will be some time before and after the event for drinks and mingling, and the authors will be on hand after the reading to autograph their books.

People is a beautiful new bar that brings the SoHo feel into the East Village (directions are at the end of this e-mail). It was recently opened by former staff of Indochine. There is a main bar downstairs with tables, comfy chairs and plenty of room to mingle, as well as a cozy loft bar with even comfier chairs.... After hours, there is a live DJ playing an eclectic mix of music (yes, he takes requests).

It's a marvelous place to have a drink and mix and mingle. There is also a wonderful new restaurant called Dish right next to People for folks that want to get a bite afterwards.

If your school has an LGBT alumni association, we will share your information with them unless you request otherwise.
