To coincide with the 2004 U.S. Women's Open Championship at the Orchards Golf Course in South Hadley, the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum is organizing a special exhibition on the history of women in sports (April 13- August 8, 2004). The installation will present a broad array of visual materials, including prints and photographs that examine the production and reception of imagery related to women's participation in exercise and sport from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. Mount Holyoke College is an appropriate setting for presenting this innovative show, as the college played a key role in developing sport for American women. Mary Lyon was adamant that exercise should be an integral part of every student's curriculum. Her vision was extremely progressive during a period when the prevailing attitude discouraged physical exertion for women. Today, the college continues to play a prominent role in the area of women's collegiate athletics. In September 2000, Sports Illustrated for Women named Mount Holyoke the number one liberal arts college for women athletes.
Marianne will make an hour-long presentation and slide show about the history of women in sports and talk about some of the items that will be on display at the Art Museum in April. There will be time for questions, and a contingent will be gathering after the presentation to go to dinner at a local restaurant. Marianne Doezema is the Florence Finch Abbott Director of the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum. Our thanks to Mount Holyoke Lyon's Pride leader Donna Albino for organizing this special event!
Receipts in excess of expenses will go to the Jolene Fund of Mount Holyoke Lyon's Pride. The Jolene Loan Fund provides financial assistance in the form of loans to women students at Mount Holyoke College who have lost support from their families for coming out as lesbians or bisexuals or for other similar circumstances involving sexual orientation.
