Our last reading was so successful that we're taking our next installment to
Therapy, where we have a bit more seating and additional standing room. Come
join us for our second reading by out authors, this time from newly released
or rereleased works of fiction.
The readings will begin promptly at 7:00 pm. There will be an opportunity for
question and answers after the reading. There will be some time before and
after the event for drinks and mingling.
Creative Visions will be on hand to sell copies of the author's books. The authors will be on hand after the reading to autograph their books.
Andrew Solomon, A STONE BOAT, Plume, 1994
This novel, a finalist for the LA Times first fiction award, tells the story
of Harry, a concert pianist, and his struggles with identity and self as his
mother is dying of cancer. The New York Times Book Review praised A STONE BOAT
as "a shimmering remembrance of things past and a meditation on love and
death." Newsday called it "intense and achingly beautiful." Copies of A STONE
BOAT will be available for sale at the event.
Born in New York, Yale GALA member Andrew Solomon studied at Yale University
and Jesus College Cambridge. In 1988, he began his study of Russian artists,
which culminated with the publication of THE IRONY TOWER: SOVIET ARTISTS IN A
TIME OF GLASNOST (Knopf, 1991). Mr. Solomon's most recent book, THE NOONDAY
DEMON: AN ATLAS OF DEPRESSION (Scribner, 2001), has won him eleven national
awards, including the 2001 National Book Award. It was a finalist for the
Pulitzer Prize and has been on the New York Times bestseller lists. The NY
Times review described it as "All-encompassing, brave, deeply humane...a book
of remarkable depth, breadth and vitality...open-minded, critically informed
and poetic all at the same time...fearless, and full of compassion." Mr.
Solomon has lectured on depression around the world, including recent stints
at Princeton, Yale, Stanford, Harvard, and Brown. He is a fellow of Berkeley
College at Yale University and is a member of the New York Institute for the
Humanities.
Tom Dolby, THE TROUBLE BOY, Kensington Books, March 2004
In the tradition of Less Than Zero and Bright Lights, Big City, Tom Dolby has
written a searing debut novel about going after your dreams without losing
yourself in the process. Powerfully written and keenly felt, The Trouble Boy
heralds an exciting new voice in fiction. Bestselling out author Christopher
Rice called this book "an expertly observed and deeply unsettling debut."
Copies of THE TROUBLE BOY will be available for sale at the event.
Yale GALA's Tom Dolby was born in London and grew up in San Francisco. His
writing has appeared in The Village Voice, Time Out New York, and Out
magazine, and he is the author of the downtown guidebook CityTripping New
York. He lives in New York City, and is currently working on his second novel,
which takes place at a boarding school.
David Ebershoff, reading from a book in progress
Ebershoff's first novel, THE DANISH GIRL (Penguin USA, 2001), is based on the
true story of Lili Elbe, who in 1931 became the first person ever to undergo
gender reassignment surgery. He will be reading from his novel-in-progress.
Copies of THE DANISH GIRL will be available for sale at the event.
Brown TBGALA's David Ebershoff is the bestselling author of two novels, THE
DANISH GIRL and PASADENA, and a collection of short stories, THE ROSE CITY.
His books have been published in more than a dozen countries to critical
acclaim. Since 1998 he has been the publishing director of the Modern
Library, a division of Random House. At Random House he edits a number of
writers including Norman Mailer, Bernard Lewis, Jane Jacobs, and Ron
Rosenbaum. He has taught fiction writing at NYU and Princeton. Originally
from California, he is a regular book reviewer for the Los Angeles Times. A
graduate of Brown University, Ebershoff currently lives in New York.
Philip Galanes, FATHER'S DAY, Knopf, May 2004
Hailed as a superb comic novel - whose action unfolds on New York City phone
sex chat lines and in a tony New England village - FATHER'S DAY is, at heart,
the story of a son coming to terms with the loss of his father, and a sly and
at times exquisitely tender exploration of grief and loneliness and the depth
of childhood shame. In the voice of Matthew Vaber - wildly antic, yet urbane
and cannily conspiratorial - Galanes has created one of the freshest and
funniest characters to emerge in years: A young man coming to grips with his
own vulnerability and pureness of heart through a deliciously funny descent
into a cock-eyed fantasy of self-annihilation. FATHER'S DAY introduces us to a
brilliant new writer of immense talent and charm. Copies of FATHER'S DAY will
be available for sale at the event.
Yale GALA's Philip Galanes was born and raised in New England, and earned
degrees at Yale College and the Yale Law School. He worked as an
entertainment attorney at Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison, representing
clients in theater, television, publishing and film. More recently, he served
as the General Counsel and Chief Operating Officer of Golden Books Family
Entertainment, a children's media company. He serves on the boards of
directors of several companies and currently represents clients in private
practice. His first novel, Father's Day, is being published by Alfred A.
Knopf in June 2004. Philip Galanes lives in New York City and East Hampton.
He is at work on his second novel.
Therapy is the latest hot spot in midtown. Located conveniently to a large
number of great eateries, this is a fabulous place to meet up with friends and
see the midtown and upper west side folk! It has two levels with places to
drink and eat on both levels. It serves a light menu that's perfect for
snacks or for a full meal.
We thank Creative Visions for attending this event and making the authors'
books available for sale! Creative Visions is New York's Largest, Only

Like all of our events, all are welcome, but we especially welcome LGBT alumni
from the ivy league and seven sisters schools, as well as our friends from
Stanford, NYU, UVA, Duke, and Georgetown University. Feel free to bring your
friends, boyfriends and girlfriends! We also welcome suggestions of authors
for our next reading. We are particularly looking for books that have just
been published or are about to be published, but that is not a fixed
requirement. We particularly encourage you to suggest women authors.
To subscribe to our events newsletter, use our RSVP Form.
If your school has an LGBT alumni association, we will share your information with them unless you request otherwise.
