Contracts, a new play by Harvard Gay and Lesbian Caucus' Justin Deabler and
directed by Ari Kreith, chronicles the lives of four first-year Harvard Law
students taking a contracts course that serves as an allegorical
representation of the unspoken contracts that they enter into in their
personal lives everyday. As they negotiate the terms of these unspoken
contracts -- the expectations and obligations -- that govern their intimate
relationships, we go back to the surreal classroom, introducing new legal
doctrines that parallel the dilemmas in our characters' lives. As they
struggle with problems of divorce, fidelity, disability, and role-playing in
same-sex relationships, the students explore the difficulties these
relationships pose to the autonomous self.
At a time when gay marriage is positioned front-and-center in the American
culture war, Contracts uses legal doctrine to ask important questions about
the nature of love: can it be defined or preserved by contractual agreement,
or is love, simply, a gift?
The show will be followed by a talk-back with the cast and director, and a
reception in the theater and lobby.Ê The reception will feature
complimentary vodka drinks, sponsored by Boru Vodka.
Like all of our events, all are welcome, but we especially welcome LGBT
alumni from the ivy league and seven sisters schools, as well as our friends
from Stanford, NYU, UVA, Duke, Williams, and Georgetown University. Feel
free to bring your friends, boyfriends and girlfriends!
