LYNX, the women's network of Out Professionals, FFR/Princeton BTGALA,
and Mind The Gap Theatre invite you to a very special preview reading of
the classic 1960's masterpiece, "THE KILLING OF SISTER GEORGE" written
by Frank Marcus of "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" and "The Dirty
Dozen" fame.
Set in London, this ferociously funny black comedy centers around June
Buckridge who plays the part of a District Nurse, Sister George (Barbara
Rosenblat), on a wildly popular radio soap opera. When the show's
decidedly unmerciful executive director and "moral guidance"
supervisor, Mercy Croft (Christine Rendel) delivers news of the BBC's
decision to kill off the Sister George character, June's temper explodes
into one hilarious tirade after another. No one is safe in her lyrical
war path, but neighbor, confidante and clairvoyant, Madame Xenia
(Marilyn Bernard) offers to put a curse against the impending nemesis.
The frank and sultry depiction of June - known to everyone as "George" -
as a foul-mouthed, cigar-smoking, booze-drinking, bra-swinging,
unabashed lesbian makes SISTER GEORGE an important historical
contribution to early queer theater. June's twisted rollicks with her
"handy companion", Alice "Childe" McNaught (Polly Lee), earned the film
version an X rating upon its initial release in 1967. That same year,
Beryl Reid, as June, received a Tony Award for Best Actress in the
Broadway version. SISTER GEORGE is a contextual gem for the shocker it
was in its day. Newbies should expect a jaw-droppingly naughty, loveable
and eruptively humorous plot that doesn't stop from first to last word.
The brainchild of Paula D'Alessandris, Mind The Gap Theatre (MTG) was
conceived in 1998 to import edgy British productions, readings and
workshops to welcoming New York audiences and, in return, export some of
America's unknown theatrical talent. Paula will be on hand for meet and
greet before and after the reading. Producing partners are sought to
help mount the Off-Broadway production of THE KILLING OF SISTER GEORGE
scheduled for the fall of 2005. For more info: 212.252.3137 or
