Slide presentation by Marianne Doezema, director of the Mount Holyoke College
art museum.
Paintings of the female figure became extremely popular in this county
at the end of the nineteenth century and in the first decades of the
twentieth. Often these images were idealized, presenting woman as the
embodiment of refinement and taste and the evocation of aesthetic beauty
and spirituality. On the other hand, I find most interesting those
images that do not resort to mythology or allegory. This slide talk
focuses on images of contemporary women during a period when the
so-called feminine sphere was being negotiated in written and verbal
discourse and in visual images of all kinds.
Donations toward the Jolene Fund - http://www.mhlp.org/jolene - will be
gratefully accepted. Mount Holyoke Lyon's Pride's Jolene Loan Fund
provides financial assistance in the form of loans to students at Mount
Holyoke College who have lost support from their families for coming out
as lesbians or bisexuals or for other similar circumstances involving
sexual orientation. Donations are completely tax-deductible. Ivy/Seven
Sister GALA members are very welcome to attend.
