Two Assistant Professors working in the field of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual
and Transgender (LGBT) studies have been appointed by Princeton
University departments from the University's Society of Fellows, a
seven-year-old post-doctoral program for outstanding young scholars.
Princeton's History Department appointed Dr. Margot Canaday, and the
English Department appointed Dr. Gayle Salamon. This is the first time
Princeton has named Fellows directly from the program to tenure-track
positions.
In 2003, the Fund for Reunion, Inc. announced that it would underwrite a
Fellowship dedicated to LGBT studies. When applications were submitted
in the fall of 2004, the Society was so impressed with the quality of
candidates that they chose both Dr. Canaday and Dr. Salamon as Fellows.
Canaday and Salamon have been at Princeton since 2005.
Dr. Leonard Barkan, Arthur W. Marks '19 Professor of Comparative
Literature at Princeton and Director of the Society of Fellows, said
about these appointments that "this is the greatest possible triumph for
the Society of Fellows, but more particularly for the marvelous
generosity of the Fund for Reunion in envisioning a need to bring young
scholars with an interest in LGBT Studies to Princeton.
"The fact that these are the first Fellows in the Society to be hired at
Princeton and the fact that both of them came to our attention (and we
to theirs) because of the LGBT initiative - well, what can I say but
that we all have great reason to celebrate, to give thanks, and to look
forward to many more years at Princeton with brilliant faculty members
who will doubtless take the LGBT-related disciplines in important new
directions."
As Dr. Canaday said, "In creating the fellowship,
the Fund For Reunion identified a need, developed an
initiative, and the University responded. I feel very
lucky to have been swept along by this current. That
both Dr. Salamon and I were hired says something very
positive about the climate here at Princeton."
FFR will sponsor Amin Ghaziani, a cultural and political sociologist, as a new Fellow for the 2008-2011 term.
Dr. Margot Canaday
Dr. Canaday is currently completing a manuscript entitled The Straight
State: Sexuality and Citizenship in Twentieth Century America. The book
- which asks how and why the federal government came to regulate
homosexuality - is under contract with Princeton University Press. She
is the recipient of three dissertation prizes, as well as the Louis M.
Pelzer article prize from the Organization of American Historians for a
2003 piece in the Journal of American History. A new essay,
"Heterosexuality as a Legal Regime," is forthcoming in the Cambridge
History of Law in America (Cambridge University Press, 2008). Dr.
Canaday's teaching interests include gender and women's history, the
history of sexuality, as well as American political, legal, and policy
history.
Dr. Gayle Salamon
Dr. Salamon has used her time at Princeton to explore the function of
transgender within lesbian, feminist and queer discourses. She is
completing a manuscript based on her Ph.D. dissertation at the
University of California at Berkeley that combines psychoanalytic and
phenomenological theories of embodiment in an analysis of
transgenderism. While at Princeton, she has written about trans
identity, feminism, and photography, and has published articles in
differences, GLQ, and Studies in Gender and Sexuality. Dr. Salamon has
taught an introductory course on gender and sexuality in the Program in
the Study of Women and Gender, a course entitled "What Is a Body?", and
will teach a Queer Studies course in the fall.
The following is a sampling of the LGBT Center- sponsored events on
campus this fall.
Jared Polis '96, an internet entrepreneur, self-made millionaire, and
FFR supporter, garnered the Democratic nomination and won his race for
the House seat in Colorado's second congressional district. According to
The Advocate (8/14/08), this win was slated to make Polis, 34, the first
openly gay man elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a
nonincumbent.
Charles Whitebread '65 (Woodrow Wilson School) passed away on September
16. Whitebread was a law professor at USC, as well as an author and
philanthropist. According to The Advocate (11/4/2008), he died of
lung cancer. He is survived by his partner, John Golden, and has been a
benefactor of FFR.

Notes on the Financial Report
Our business year runs from July 1 to June 30.
We consider our operating expenses to be those expenses not designated as endowment expenses, which currently include the fellowship and the lecture series.
More dues were paid this year than last, but numbers continue to be quite low. Nonendowment expenses were lower this year.
Campus-related funding was somewhat lower this year due to lighter funding for the formal event.
Scholarships granted were substantially lower than last year due to fewer applications.
Our operating shortfall this year was $1,180, significantly lower than
last year in part due to light scholarship applications; this trend will
not continue if scholarship applications return to past levels.
Income from the endowment was low due to a more conservative strategy
and low interest rates.
Interest on the endowment was substantially less than endowment related
expenses this year.
This report was prepared by Shawn Cowls '87, President, FFR/Princeton BTGALA.
The FFR community, including alumni, students, faculty, and staff, grew 4.5% this year, from 1,319 at this time last year to 1,379. With the exception of the classes of '46 and '52, we have alumni from every class since 1945. Our oldest alum is from the class of '38. Our largest class is '85 with 44 alumni followed closely by '87 with 42. The class of '64 is a stand out, with 11 alumni - the neighboring classes of '63 and '65 have 5 alumni and one alum respectively. Particularly under-represented classes (relative to their neighboring classes) include the class of 1998 with 14 alumni and the class of 1975 with seven.
