Fiction Reading New York City
7 pm, November 13, 1997

Janet Schomer '82 - Linda Yablonsky - Scott Heim - Brad Gooch

Princeton Alum Janet Schomer '82 heads up a group of talented gay and lesbian authors reading from works of fiction soon to be published. She will be reading from her novel in progress. Also reading is Linda Yablonsky, acclaimed author of "The Story of Junk." We are hoping also to have authors Scott Heim and Brad Gooch reading from their new works or works in progress. Entrance is only a $20 donation, which gets you admission to the reading as well as a wine and cheese reception at Art in General, 79 Walker Street in Soho. Invitations will be mailed shortly to people in the New York region. If you aren't in that region and would like to attend, or would like more information, contact Shawn Cowls at 212-229-1769 or send an e-mail to Fund for Reunion We are also looking for volunteers (you get free admission!) to help with set up and clean up.

Canoeing Recap

August, 1997

Our outdoor event was a great success. Fourteen people showed up and all had a great time! Todd Dejesus '90 took us on a leisurely ride down the Wading River followed by a pizza party at his home. All agreed that we should do more events like these. The only disappointing note was that only two women came to this event when we were sure it would have cross-gender appeal. All you ladies out there: any ideas on what you would like us to do? (By the way, our New York fiction reading features two very talented lesbian authors - we hope to see some more women at that event!)

Alumni Action!

Career Networking

The Fund for Reunion is reorganizing its effort to help students and recent lgb graduates find out about careers and jobs. This fall, we are organizing a network of alumni and their friends for this effort. Larry Sicular '75 is coordinating the effort, so give him your telephone numbers and/or e-mail address as well as a brief description of your work or business. We'll get you in touch with students interested in finding about your career and/or job opportunities. Contact Larry at: Home: (212) 749-9525 Work: (212) 508-7257 Fax: (212) 961-1217

Campus Updates:

Princeton Hires a New LGB Coordinator

Hopkins University Graduate Stephen Knight Hired to Replace Michelle Seldin

David Masse '99 Reporting

There's a new person in the Dean of Student Life Office this fall. His name is Stephen Knight, and he follows Michelle Seldin as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Coordinator. This position is a full-time, one-year (with the option of another year's extension) paid internship funded from the budgets of the Dean of Student Life and the Dean of Religious Life and the Chapel. Stephen comes to Princeton after graduating from The Johns Hopkins University with a B.A. in psychology. He is originally from New York and lives in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan.

As an undergraduate he held several positions in his school's lesbian and gay student organization, which began to call itself the Diverse Sexuality and Gender Alliance while he was co-chair. He also founded the Maryland Intercollegiate Lambda Coalition (MILC), which holds regular meetings to give the member colleges a chance to discuss--and collaborate to improve--the situation of LGBT students statewide.

Stephen cites this experience as well as his motivation and commitment as qualities that will make him an effective coordinator. He looks forward to bringing his unique perspective as a West Indian black gay male to the job as well. His goals for the upcoming year include making Princeton a safer and friendlier place for LGBT people and providing them with access to any resources that they may need. He also hopes to stimulate dialogue about LGBT issues among all members of the Princeton community.

Assistant Dean of Student Life Kathleen Deignan --who made the final decision to hire Stephen after a series of interviews and consultation with an advisory committee made up of staff, administrators and students--envisions the LGB Coordinator's responsibilities as threefold. First and foremost, he should sponsor imaginative programming ranging from academic lectures to social events.

These forums should also be "pitched at different levels of sophistication," by which Dean Deignan means that people with varying degrees of familiarity with, and sympathy for, the LGBT community should be engaged by them. Second, he is to advise student groups--helping the LGBA, for example, to maintain continuity among its leadership although the officers change every year. Lastly, the Coordinator serves as an entrance point to the University for students who may need institutional support. A student who is questioning her sexuality or in the process of coming out to friends might be referred by the Coordinator to the Counseling Center if appropriate. Dean Deignan feels that Stephen has the persistence, confidence, listening and conflict-resolution skills, intelligence and reserve to fulfill these expectations ably.

Financial Report for 1996/1997

The past year was a very good year for FFR/Princeton GALA financially. Dues were way up from prior years, and since we did not sponsor a summer intern this year as budgeted, we wound up quite in the red, leaving us with a health balance. As in past years, a portion of the increase in the operating fund will be transferred to the Endowment Fund that we are growing.

As you may notice, our single biggest expense this year is our newsletter, representing a full 44% of our expenses. If you enjoy this newsletter or appreciate the activities we have or the support we provide to L/G/B students at Princeton, please support us by renewing your membership! Your current membership status can be found on the address label after your name. If it says M97/98 after your name, you are up to date!

Call for Dues

Dear Members and Friends:

It's that time of the year again when I remind you about all we have been doing and encourage you to pay dues to help support us. First of all, thank you all for your support! Over the past eleven years, the FFR/Princeton GALA has accomplished an extraordinary amount: sensitivity training for Princeton's counselors, increased visibility of gay people in the Alumni Council, a full time coordinator for the gay/lesbian/bisexual students' group on campus, career assistance for students, additional programs and activities for gay/lesbian/bisexual students at Princeton, and a gay/lesbian/bisexual studies program. We have sponsored activities for alumni as well, on campus at reunions and at alumni day, and off campus in the form of get-togethers/fund-raisers both in the New York area and elsewhere. Through it all, we have earned the respect and cooperation of the administration of Princeton University - both as people and as an organization. None of this could have been possible without your continued support, financially and otherwise. As a member of the current board, I extend the gratitude of the board and all who associated with it.

We are working hard on new challenges - a center for gay life on campus, and increased representation on the Alumni Council. Old challenges remain - continued support of the student group, more courses in gay/lesbian/bisexual studies, and more reasons for all gay/lesbian/bisexual alumni to want to become reassociated with Princeton University - both on campus and off. We are continuing our efforts begun last year to create a truly national FFR, with events for lesbian/gay/bisexual alums in locations around the country. This past year was a great success as far as dues, and I hope that this year will also be a strong year! I especially want to thank again those who stepped up to the plate last year and supported us with a $250 contribution! While we cannot and will not ask you to give us more than you can afford, we ask those of you who can afford it to renew your membership with a $25 dollar contribution. If you don't receive the newsletter by mail, send your check for $25 for alumni (or more ;) ) or $10 for students to our P.O. Box at the top (and bottom) of this newsletter.

We are here for you and because of you! Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Shawn R. Cowls '87
