You heard it here first! (Sorry, these didn’t make the newsletter!)
The Executive Committee of the Alumni Council has only had two seats foraffiliated groups such as ours, so at any given time most of the groups arenot represented on the council (and this year both of the seats were occupiedby one of the affiliate groups, the one representing black alumni). Groupsnot represented get no mention in the alumni publications and are notrepresented on the alumni council itself either. Our sources say that theExecutive Committee is close to passing a resolution creating seats for arepresentative from each of the affiliate groups. This is a very significantstep forward, at least in terms of visibility and respect by the AlumniCouncil. We hope to have more on this in our summer newsletter.
Our annual key-note address features Professor Karen R. Merrill, an Assistant Professor of History at Princeton, whose specialty is the 20th century and the Western United States. She is a dynamic and openly gay member of the Princeton community.
Professor Merrill’s talk on Saturday, May 30, is titled "Teaching the 20thCentury at the End of the 20th Century". She looks forward to speaking on her experience as an "out" member of the faculty, on gay and lesbian themes in20th century history, and perhaps she will even throw in a queer cowboy story or two!

Hope to see you there!
At press time, our mailing list records show that 118 of the over 600 alumni on our mailing list have paid dues this year. This is just a little shy of last year’s record number! If you value what we do and you haven’t paid dues yet this year, please drop us a check! Dues are $10 for students anywhere(yes, that includes graduate students) and $25 for others. If you are a Princeton alum, we will keep sending you our newsletter even if you don’t pay dues, but we would very much love your support! If you are not sure whether you have paid dues or not, check the mailing label - if you are current it will say "M97/98." (We apologize if you have recently paid dues and the label does not yet reflect that.)
Thank you so much for your support!
Due to an already overstuffed envelope, we are unable to include a return envelope in this mailing, so fill out the section below and mail it and your check to:

We are sorry to report that the current LGBTA Coordinator, Stephen Knight, resigned his position mid-year to follow other pursuits. We wish him well.
The University will be choosing a successor who will begin next fall. In the meantime, Stephen’s duties will be assumed by Sandy Silverman, a dean in the Office of Student Life.
There were, however, not-so-positive bits, including the (temporary?) demise of our weekly men's/women's group meetings, the intern's abrupt resignation, and the end of the Gaily Princetonian, among others. None of the current officers, after a lot of work are seeking re-election and thus far no new leadership has stepped forward.
The LGBA has undergone significant transformations in the last couple of years. In my opinion, these parallel fundamental changes in the general LGBT movement. The (post-Ellen) move seems to be from the "We're here; we're queer; get used to it!!" style to an inner re-definition of community and of how to best foster and service such a community. It is my hope that more students come forth and get involved in leadership positions in the near future.
Elected at our annual meeting this coming reunions....
