Career Panel at Princeton

On Tuesday, October 13, at 7:30 pm, FFR/Princeton GALA is hosting a special career panel for the LGBA. October 11-17 is Awareness Week on campus, and as part of the many great events being held for lgb students, we will be hosting a panel of lgb alums talking about their careers, job opportunities, and being lgb in the workplace. We are very much in need of people for this panel, so if you would like to talk about what you do, if you have positions you need to fill and what a great lgb Princeton student, or if you just want to let students know you're available for conversations about careers, let us know! We would love to have you! E-mail us at Fund for Reunion or call 212-229-1769.

Upcoming board meetings

FFR board meetings are open to anyone interested in participating or finding more about what we do! Our next meeting will be in Princeton which means that you will get a chance to meet the new coordinator and some of the active students: November 7, 1998, 3pm, Terrace Club.

The meeting following that will be on January 16, 1998, at a location to be determined (probably in New York City).

We'd love to see you, so drop us a line and let us know if you would like to come!

On Campus

Princeton Welcomes the New LGB Concerns Coordinator, Ryan Foley

by Trae Williamson '94

This year, Princeton welcomes Ryan Foley as the new LGB Coordinator. The LGB Concerns Coordinator works jointly with the Dean of the Chapel and the Office of the Dean of Student Life, and serves to counsel, support, and organize the gay, lesbian, gay, and bisexual student community. Raised in the Mid-West, Ryan recently graduated from Stanford University (... and yes, he met Chelsea once, at a party). While at Stanford, Ryan was involved in the Big Sibling Program, an a capella singing-group, and the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Community Center. As a college senior, Ryan became manager of the LGB Center, which served as an umbrella organization for the university's many queer student groups. Through his work at the center, Ryan heard about the job at Princeton. He applied, interviewed, and was accepted.

Recently arrived in New Jersey, he is very impressed with how beautiful Princeton is. He admits that it's very different from Palo Alto, California. Nevertheless, he's delighted to turn in palm trees and surf boards for ivy and gothic towers. He jokes, "Princeton is so... Dead Poets Society."

Ryan is also impressed with the energy and enthusiasm of the gay and lesbian students he has met so far. In contrast to the troubles of last year's LGBA student group, he feels that this year's LGBA will be vital and active. Coming soon is the LGBA's kick-off event for new Freshman students, an ice cream social. Students are already looking toward Awareness Week in October, planning a full schedule of events.

One of Ryan's first official responsibilities as LGB Concerns Coordinator was to personally train the incoming Residential Advisors and Minority Affairs Advisors, helping to build awareness and sensitivity toward gay and lesbian student issues. He was delighted to see how receptive the students were, especially since this year's program was mandatory for all RA's and MAA's, not just the ones who volunteered to attend out of previous interest in gay and lesbian concerns.

Princeton is still one of only a few universities to fund a position like the LGB Concerns Coordinator. It seems that this year's gay student community will be especially lucky, since Ryan Foley is up-to-task and on-the-job.

FFR Online

by Shawn Cowls '87, FFR President

Website

FFR continues to move at a lumbering pace into the 21st century. Our site manager and technology guru Nico Janbert '96 *98 has moved our website from the Princeton University student server to the alumni server so that he can continue to maintain it for us now that he is no longer a student. If you have access to the web, check out our site at: http://alumni.princeton.edu/~ffr-gala. Nico has done a marvelous job putting together a site featuring our mission statement, back issues of our newsletter (under reconstruction but should be back up when you receive this), upcoming and past activities of FFR and of the LGB student groups, and links to other Princeton sites of interest. You can also use the site to communicate with us directly.

While you are visiting the web, check out the article on FFR in the online edition of the PAW: http://www.princeton.edu/~paw/PAW97-98/16-0610/0610otc.html#story1. Though it gives me far too much credit and overlooks the very substantial contributions that many different alums made in forming and developing FFR, it is quite a favorable article and a welcome mention of what FFR has accomplished over the years.

E-Mail

FFR/Princeton GALA maintains an e-mail list. All of our newsletters are sent to this list as well as short notice items (FFR board meeting notices, local events) that do not go out via US Post. If you wish, you can request to be on the blind copies list and your e-mail address will not show up on the notes. Write to us with your e-mail address or send us a note to Fund for Reunion A couple of you have suggested starting a TigerNet Discussion Group. We are happy to announce it if any of you feel like starting one up! If you haven't checked out TigerNet, go to http://tigernet.princeton.edu/

Reunions Recap, 1998

It was great to see so many of you this year at Reunions! Special thanks to our key-note speaker Professor Karen R. Merrill. Her thought provoking treatise on teaching the 20th Century was quite a highlight. Thanks also to David Beaty '50 for the rainbow we displayed outside of our events.

The dance was a bit lightly attended this year. We can only assume that the lack of posters this year had a dampening effect - we promise to right that next year!

Regional Activities

New York City Mixer

Thanks to everyone who came to the last event that Tom Grant '64 hosted as a member of the board of FFR. The food was marvelous and the company great as always. We will miss Tom's masterful hand at putting on a great event!

Washington, D.C. Warming Up

James Garret '82 and five other alums in the capital are gearing up for an event in October or November! We'll mail invitations to those of you in the DC area as well as to the e-mail list, so stay tuned! In the mean time, if you would like to help out or get more information, call James at (202) 466-4048, or e-mail him at j.garrett@cgnet.com.

Notes

* Due to an excellent response to our dues requests combined with no summer intern and a light scholarship payout (one 97/98 award was not paid until the 98/99 fiscal year), net income in the general account was very high this past year. Due to the unusually high level of the ending general account, At the summer meeting we agreed to transfer $3,000 to the endowment.

** In the 97/98 year, our endowment was managed by Brandon Fradd '83. Under his excellent stewardship, we experienced returns in excess of 200%. This extraordinary level of return is not expected to continue.

Ruminations

As we start a new fiscal year it is always nice to review what we are about. FFR/Princeton GALA was founded as a non-profit 501c(3) corporation whose goal essentially is improving the Princeton experience for LGB students, alumni, and, increasingly, faculty and staff. To that end, we organize activities for alumni at reunions and sometimes on alumni day, help fund activities for the LGB student groups, give scholarships to Princeton students doing LGB research, help fund internships for Princeton students at LGB non-profit organizations, assist students in career networking. We also provide guidance for the LGB coordinator, assist the University in dealing with LGB students, and soon will have permanent representation on the Executive Committee of the Alumni Council. We organize activities for alumni to raise funds to accomplish the above and encourage networking, and we publish a newsletter approximately quarterly to keep you all up to date. All of these activities are funded out of our general account. FFR also has an endowment which we hope will one day allow us to endow a chair in LGB studies at Princeton (see our financial report for exciting news on the growth of the endowment).

None of the above would be possible without your support and financial contributions. Your dues pay for the newsletter and a significant portion of the financial support we give to the LGB student groups. Money raised at our fund raisers allow us to give scholarships and support internships. FFR is run by a panel of unpaid volunteer alumni trustees whose efforts have made us what we are today, so all of your contributions go directly to our work. Of course a staff of volunteers means that we don't always move as quickly as we would like in responding to your greatly appreciated suggestions and contributions, so we thank you for your patience!

Of course this leads up to a dues request, and your first chance to get M98/99 put on your mailing label! Enclosed is a return envelope for your convenience - please write the amount of your contribution on the envelope to help us more accurately send you letters of receipt and gratitude. We apologize to the small number of people for whom the letter sent did not correctly reflect the amount given and are working to improve our accuracy.
