FEBRUARY 2002 Volume 11, Number 2![]() Master Artists of the American West: A Private Tour of the Anschutz Collection of Western Art![]() ![]() FRIDAY, MARCH 22, 2002 Join us for a truly rare opportunity to see the full Anschutz Collection of Western Art, the finest and most important assemblage of Western art in private hands, presented by Princeton University Professor in American Art John Wilmerding, former Senior Curator of American Art and Deputy Director of the National Gallery of Art in Washington. Professor Wilmerding will give a 45 minute talk on "Yosemite and American Art." The full collection, consisting of more than 650 oil paintings, drawings and sculptures, is housed permanently in Denver in the Navarre Building, itself a masterpiece of the late 19th Century, purchased by the Anschutz Corporation in 1997 and restored to its original elegance. The collection spans the detailed, early 1830’s images of now vanished tribes captured by George Catlin, to the 1940’s works of Georgia O’Keefe, and includes pieces by Bierstadt, Moran, Bingham, Remington, Russell and Schreyvogel, to name a few of the more than 200 artists represented. We are fortunate indeed to be able to see this collection, which has traveled abroad to France, The Republic of China, Russia and Great Britain, and has recently returned from a national tour entitled "Painters of the American West." For those who wish, a book of this title released in September of 2000 by the deputy director of the Denver Art Museum, Joan Carpenter Troccoli, featuring 206 full-color illustrations from the exhibit, is available at www.Amazon.com. Substantial hors d’oeuvres, beer and wine will be catered at the Navarre, and included in the $36 cost for this event payable by check to "RMPC," in advance please. RSVP (then mail in check) to Robert Ireland ’76 at: ireland1976@attbi.com. Parking available in outdoor lots nearby. Feel free to stay and view the collection till 9:30 p.m. Funding Club ActivitiesIf you didn’t join last November or December, you haven’t yet paid club dues for this year. Event fees will not fully cover the cost of events mentioned in this newsletter, which itself costs $700. So please, consider sending in your membership dues for this year: $25 regular ($15 for ‘97-’01); $50 sustaining; $100 patron, to Chris Penny ’85.A Cappella and Wine with St. Patrick’s Day!
SUNDAY, MARCH 17, 2002 Join other Princeton alumni and their friends at the Boulder home of Kim and Demetri Coupounas ’88, ’89 for excellent wines, heavy hors d’oeuvres, and many things green (not the wine!), while enjoying the jazz and pop music of the world-traveled Princeton Katzenjammers, the Ivy League’s oldest co-ed a cappella singing group. The wine tasting will be presented by connoisseurs Christie Townsend and Jeff Hickman, owners of "BACCHUS Wine Made Simple," a well-known Boulder purveyor of wines from around the world. The price is $15 (or $20 at the door), payable to "The Princeton Katzenjammers," c/o Kim Coupounas. Rsvp by 3/13 to Kim at kim@golite.com.
Chamberlain Art Studio Tour
Wednesday, April 3,2002 This studio tour is for those interested in getting a true, behind-the-scenes, hands-on artistic experience. Sculptor and painter David Chamberlain ’71 has recently moved to the Denver area where he uses a technique he has developed to paint on transparent plates over a light table using mirrors and an etching press (no brushes) to transfer the image to paper. This creates images collected at over 200 institutions worldwide. Join David, pictured above, to learn how he creates his works and try your hand at creating something. Wine, cheese and a fascinating evening for $10 (to "RMPC"). Rsvp to David at chamberlaind@earthlink.net, for directions and details. ![]() |
