Recipient of the 1993 Nobel Prize in Literature, Toni Morrison is the author of the esteemed novels The Bluest Eye, Sula, Song of Solomon, Tar Baby, and Beloved. She has received the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize, among numerous other distinctions. Set in pre-revolutionary America, A Mercy is the story of a mother who casts her daughter into slavery with hopes of saving her, and of the daughter, who may never fully exorcise that abandonment.
