Dubbed the “best museum you’ve never been to” by Philadelphia Magazine in 2007, the Rosenbach is at once a historic house, museum and research library with highlights including the original, handwritten manuscript of James Joyce’s Ulysses, first books published by an African American (Phillis Wheatley) and a woman in America (Anne Bradstreet), the notes and outlines by Bram Stoker for Dracula, a re-creation of the Greenwich living room occupied by poet Marianne Moore, and the works of Maurice Sendak, creator of Where the Wild Things Are.
The tour includes an overview of the museum and a slice of
early-to-mid-twentieth century Philadelphia history featuring the Rosenbach
brothers – rare book and antique dealers with a wide and eclectic circle of
friends.
The director of the museum, Derick Dreher, received his undergraduate degree from Princeton and his PhD in art history from Yale University.
