Spring, 2009

ANNUAL MEETING          Join us on Wednesday, May 13, 2009, for the Princeton Alumni Association of Western Pennsylvania’s Annual Meeting to be held at the Allegheny-HYP Club.  The festivities start at 5:30 pm in the lounge for cocktails and spectacular hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar.  We will then move to the second floor for a brief business meeting and a talk by George Bustin ’70, Lecturer in the Woodrow Wilson School and Faculty Associate of the Program in Law and Public Affairs.  His topic is “Personal Encounters with the New Russia” which will examine the strategic foundations of Russia’s position in the international system following the war in Georgia and in light of Russia’s assertive energy policy based on his experience of nearly 15 years as the international legal counsel to the Russian Ministry of Finance.  In addition, George was ASC chair in Belgium for 15 years, so we will be delighted to hear of his experience there, too.  The cost of the evening is $25, with a special rate of $15 for alumni from the classes of 2000 to 2012.  Please RSVP to Mary Ellen Martin Dye ’76 at memdye@gmail.com by May 6.

ALUMNI SCHOOLS COMMITTEE                We are delighted to announce that the following students were admitted to Princeton this year.  Once again, it was a tough year for the Admissions Office, since over 21,000 students applied for admission to the Class of 2013.  Please congratulate these students and make sure they know where the “best place of all” is!  You are welcome to meet them at a reception on Wednesday, April 15, from 5-7 pm at the Allegheny-HYP Club. RSVP to Mary Parks Lamb ’90 at mlamb90@alumni.princeton.edu.  Hope to see you there!

PRINCETON PRIZE IN RACE RELATIONS     The inaugural year of the Princeton Prize in Race Relations in the Pittsburgh area was very successful.   The local committee selected Denise Jones, a senior at South Fayette High School, as our First Prize Winner, and also awarded Certificates of Accomplishment to Olivia DiNucci of Shaler High School and Amonte Eberhardt of Penn Hills High School.  We will be honoring these students at an Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, May 6, at 5 pm at the Allegheny-HYP Club.  We are honored that Chris Ivey, local filmmaker and producer/director of the acclaimed documentary “East of Liberty” will be the guest speaker.  Please consider attending and learning more about this program and especially to congratulate these fine young people from the Pittsburgh area.

PRINCETON BOOK AWARD          The Princeton Book Award is given to outstanding students at the end of their junior year at public and private secondary schools across the country.  Local alumni organizations are responsible for initiating and maintaining the program.  Our goal is to initiate a successful program for the PAAWP.  Criteria for selections of the student includes intellectual promise and academic excellence; exemplary service or extracurricular activities; and outstanding personal character.  Prizes are books from prominent Princeton authors.  For example, Toni Morrison’s Beloved and The Bluest Eye  have been given in the past.  Books may be donated by PAAWP members who may then specify the school or schools to which they wish the books to be sent.  Individual recipients are selected by the schools’ faculties.  The Prize is presented at a high school’s graduation or awards ceremony.  If you are interested in sponsoring a book prize, please contact Mary Parks Lamb ’90 at mlamb90@alumni.princeton.edu  for more specifics.  The cost of sponsoring is approximately $35-50 per year depending on the book you select and the addition of an engraved plate for the inscription on the inside cover of the book.  If interested, sponsors may attend the school’s ceremony and present the book to the chosen candidate.

UPDATE ON “STARK RAVEN MAD” AND THE DYNAMIC BUILDING BLOCKS OF LIFE

Those who were at either or both of these events know how worthwhile they were.  The Princeton Triangle Club put on a tremendous show at the Hillman Center for the Performing Arts back in December, 2008.  The PAAWP would like to thank the following for helping to house the students: the family of Brandon Lowden ’09, the family of Billy Hepfinger ’10, the family of Randall Dye ’10, the family of Kurt Brendel ’12, the family of Mark Smith ‘    , Peggy Joy ’74, Cat Sheane ’00, Kristin Long ’04, Lydia Holley ‘   , grad student James Tonn, and Cherie Maharam (aunt of one of the Triangle kids).  Also, thanks to Greg Gerlach ’84 who was pressed into being a chauffeur at the last minute.  Also, we would like to thank show producers James Braham ’54, Jack Demmler ’54, Dan Dye ’75 and Mary Ellen Martin Dye ’76, Vicki Kuftic Horne and Eric L. Horne ’75, Jean and Randall Lowden P09, Thomas McChesney ’69 and Peggy & Al Richardson ’49 (who came all the way from Erie!).  Show Patrons included Bob Auray ’73, Liz Pohl ’01, Antoniette and Vincent Barbuto P12, Robert D. Drennan ’69, Thomas J. Hilliard ’43, David R. Lassman ’84, John K. Maitland ’53, James C. McGough ’55, Albert C. Muse ’58, Lawrence B. Niemann ’59, Pamela Rollings and Neal Brendel P12, Thomas M. Schmidt ’62, Valentina Vavassis ’86 and Lex Winans ’57.

Local alums were enlightened by Professor Joshua Shaevitz who was very thorough in explaining the “Dynamic Building Blocks of Life.”  We certainly thank Professor Shaevitz  for coming to Pittsburgh and meeting with our alums.

Fall, 2008

Greetings from your Princeton Alumni Association of Western Pennsylvania.

Dues Notice and Scholarship Appeal

As always, enclosed is the annual Dues Notice and Scholarship Appeal.  Dues are $35 for established alumni, and there are lower rates for younger alumni.  There is a line on the form for contributions to the Alumni Schools Committee and Scholarship Fund.  Your contributions to the ASC help pay for the very important work that the committee does in recruiting, interviewing and persuading young students to apply to and attend the best old place of all.  The other line is for another very important program which your alumni association proudly works on every year—the PAAWP Scholarship Fund.  Under  the leadership of the late Thomas Nimick ’45, our Scholarship Fund has grown to where we now award through the University’s financial aid program four $5500 scholarships every year.  In addition, we are working on increasing this amount since the annual cost of attending Princeton is now $45,000 per year!  THIS WILL BE THE ONLY SCHOLARSHIP APPEAL MAILING THIS YEAR.  In the past, Tom generously funded and sent out a separate appeal, but the PAAWP Board has decided to incorporate it with this mailing.  Please continue to give as generously as you have in the past so that present and future local students can afford to attend Princeton.  Thank you for your support of your local association and its work.

Princeton Triangle Show Returns to Pittsburgh!

The Triangle Show Tour will be performing in Pittsburgh on Tuesday, December 16, 2008, at The Hillman Center for the Performing Arts.  This year’s show is “Stark Raven Mad—An Edgar Allan Show” and will feature several Pittsburgh area students in the cast and crew.  More information on the show will be mailed out later, but you can go online to purchase tickets at http://www.triangleshow.com/.  Prices are Producers’ Circle at $200 which includes 2 VIP seats, listing above the show title in the program, invitation to the post show reception and the right to buy additional tickets for $10, Patron at $ 50 which includes program listing, preferential seating and invitation to the post show reception, Triangle Fan at $30, and Student/Child at $10.

WE NEED YOUR HELP WITH HOUSING THE TRIANGLE STUDENTS.  There are about 50 in the cast and crew, and we need homes for them to stay in on the night of December 16th.  If you have a spare bedroom, guest house, place for sleeping bags, etc., please let Mary Ellen Dye ’76 know.  The kids are great, and we would love to show them some ‘burgh hospitality.
