Bob came to Princeton in 1935, after starting his schooling in a one-room school in Watkins New York and then attending Penn Yan Academy. Princeton changed his life: he majored in Economics, sang in the Choir for four years, and directed the University Orchestra for two years. He got to know Albert Einstein well, as well as Henry Norris Russell. He graduated magna cum laude.  His friend, Dean J. Douglas Brown, told him "I was the first person cut off from Phi Beta Kappa.

His life after Princeton proved even more varied. He went on to earn a Masters from Tufts and a Ph D from Harvard. During the war he set rubber prices for the OPA. He ended his working life as a Princeton administrator.
